Army prepared to take on the security challenges, says top general

  • Amid a spike in Pakistani drones dropping arms and digging of trans-border tunnels to push terrorists into Jammu & Kashmir, lieutenant general RP Singh, the general officer commanding-in-chief, Western Command, said the army is well prepared to take on the security challenges.
  • Speaking at a ceremony to honour gallant soldiers at Mamun Cantonment in Punjab's Pathankot, he complimented formations and units of the Western Command for their excellent performance in all spheres of military activity during the preceding year.
  • Singh presided over the ceremony and felicitated 18 officers, three junior commissioned officers, 19 other ranks and four NOK with gallantry and distinguished service awards. The awards presented included 33 Sena Medals for gallantry, five Sena Medals for distinguished service, and six Vishisht Seva Medals.
  • The commander also bestowed Unit Appreciation Awards on 18 units for their outstanding performance.

Japan conveys 'strong concerns' to China over new coast guard law

  • Japan conveyed its 'strong concerns' to China over Beijing's new law that allows its coast guard to use military force in waters the country claims, during a video meeting on maritime issues, reported the Japan Times.
  • China must not use the legislation, which went into force Monday, in a way that goes against international law, Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said at a news conference.
  • In the high-level consultation on maritime affairs involving senior bureaucrats from the two countries, Japan "firmly urged" China to exercise restraint in its actions, said Kato, the government's top spokesman.
  • The new controversial law permits the China Coast Guard to use weapons when foreign ships involved in illegal activities in waters claimed by the country fail to obey orders. The new legislation also allows it to demolish buildings constructed in those areas by foreign organizations or individuals.

World markets soar as vaccines fuel hopes

  • Among the 10 major world equity indices, India’s BSE Sensex has performed the best and has seen a 27.6% rise since the start of November, which Pfizer and Moderna started releasing data of their vaccines and their effectiveness.
  • Shares across the world have soared to record highs in recent weeks, particularly through Asia led by countries such as India, as progress in vaccine development prompted bets on normalisation in the global economy.
  • Among the 10 major world equity indices, India’s BSE Sensex has performed the best and has seen a 27.6% rise since the start of November, which Pfizer and Moderna started releasing data of their vaccines and their effectiveness.
  • While these vaccine announcement and subsequent economic relief package announcement in United States has helped in the current market rally, data shows that these 10 indices had started their upward movement since the first week of November (after the US elections).

::SCIENCE AND TECH::

China's space probe sends back its first image of Mars

  • China's Tianwen-1 probe has sent back its first image of Mars, the national space agency said, as the mission prepares to touch down on the Red Planet later this year.
  • The spacecraft, launched in July around the same time as a rival US mission, is expected to enter Mars orbit around February 10.
  • The black-and-white photo released late Friday by the China National Space Administration showed geological features including the Schiaparelli crater and the Valles Marineris, a vast stretch of canyons on the Martian surface.
  • The photo was taken about 2.2 million kilometres (1.4 million miles) from Mars, according to CNSA, which said the spacecraft was now 1.1 million kilometres from the planet.
  • The robotic craft ignited one of its engines to "make an orbital correction" Friday and was expected to slow down before being "captured by Martian gravity" around February 10, the agency said.

Ajay Singh was re-elected as the head of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI)

  • Ajay Singh Says focus will be on training of Tokyo Olympics-bound boxers, grassroot development and women's boxing.
  • Spicejet chairman Ajay Singh defeated Ashish Shelar in a high-profile contest to get re-elected as president of Boxing Federation India for a second term at the general elections held in Gurugram on Wednesday.
  • Singh defeated Shelar, former Maharashtra Cricket Association president, 37-27. Hemanta Kumar Kalita was elected secretary general and Digvijay Singh treasurer. The elections were held in the presence of AIBA observer Yury Zaystsev and IOA observer Rakesh Gupta.
  • “I am grateful that the general body of BFI has reposed trust in me and in my team. We are grateful that work of the last four years has been recognised and we will continue to serve for the growth of boxing,” said Singh.
