F. No. HQ-PPI01/8/2022-PP_1: Staff Selection Commission (SSC) will conduct an open competitive examination for recruitment to the post of Scientific Assistant in India Meteorological Department (IMD), Group ‘B’ Non-Gazetted, Non-Ministerial post, in the Level 6 of the Pay Matrix as per the Recruitment Scheme formulated by the IMD and as per the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between IMD and SSC. Post Details:
Total Vacancies: About 990.
- The number of vacancies is tentative and subject to variation.
- Reservation for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) candidates is available as per extant Government Orders.
- The posts have been identified suitable for the persons suffering from disabilities of One Arm affected (OA) or One Leg affected (OL) and Dwarfism (Dw) or Acid Attack Victims (AAV).
- The posts carry All India Service Liability (AISL) i.e. the candidate, on selection, may be asked to serve anywhere in the country.
Education Qualification:
Bachelor’s Degree in Science (with Physics as one of the subject)/Computer Science/Information Technology/Computer Applications
OR
Diploma in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering from a recognized Institution/University or equivalent.
NOTE-I: The qualifying Degree or Diploma referred above should be in First Class (60% marks) or 6.75 CGPA on a 10 point scale.
NOTE-II: The qualifying Degree or Diploma referred above must be of three (3) years duration after (10+2) examination.
NOTE-III: The applicant must have passed 10+2 Examination from a Recognized Board or equivalent in Science with Physics and Mathematics as core subjects.
Fee :
Fee payable: ₹100/- (Rupee One Hundred Only).
Women candidates and candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD)and Ex-servicemen (ESM) are exempted from payment of fee.
Age Limit :(As on closing date 18-10-2022):
- Maximum Age : 30 Year
Not exceeding 30 years as on 18-10-2022. Candidate must have been born not earlier than 19-10-1992 and not later than 17-10-2004.
Scheme of the Examination:
The Commission will conduct a Computer Based Examination comprising 200 questions carrying 200 marks for two hours duration.
The question paper would have two parts, Part-I and Part-II as detailed below:

The candidates will be required to attempt both Part-I and Part-II of the examination. Part-II of examination will be on the basis of subject opted in the online application form. In other words, the candidates opting for Physics will be required to attempt Physics paper, the candidates opting for Computer Science & IT will be required to attempt Computer Science & IT paper and the candidates opting for Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering will be required to attempt Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering paper in Part-II, failing which their candidature will be rejected.
The examination will consist of Objective Type, Multiple choice questions only. The questions will be set both in English & Hindi except for questions of English Language & Comprehensions.
There will be negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in the examination. Candidates are, therefore, advised to keep this in mind while answering the questions.
The Commission may conduct the examination in multiple shifts. Marks scored by candidates in Computer Based Examinations, if conducted in multiple shifts, will be normalized by using the formula published by the Commission vide Notice No: 1-1/2018-P&P-I dated 07-02-2019 and such normalized scores will be used to determine final merit and cut-off marks.
Tentative Answer Keys of the Computer Based Examinations will be placed on the website of the Commission after the Examination. Candidates may go through the Answer Keys and submit online representations, if any, within the stipulated time limit on payment of ₹100/- per question, which is non-refundable. Representations received through any other mode e.g. letter, application, email, etc. will not be entertained. Representation regarding the Answer Keys will be scrutinized before finalizing the Answer Keys and the decision of the Commission in this regard will be final.
How to Apply:
Applications must be submitted only in online mode at the website of SSC Headquarter i.e. https://ssc.nic.in. For detailed instructions, please refer to Annexure-III and Annexure-IV. Sample proforma of One-time Registration and online Application Form are attached as Annexure-IIIA and Annexure-IVA respectively.
In the online Application Form, candidates are required to upload the scanned colour passport size photograph in JPEG format (20 KB to 50 KB). The photograph should not be more than three months old from the date of publication of the Notice of Examination. Image dimension of the photograph should be about 3.5 cm (width) x 4.5 cm (height). The photograph should be without cap, spectacles and the frontal view of the face should be clearly visible.
If the proper photograph is not uploaded by a candidate, his candidature will be cancelled. Specimen of photographs which are acceptable/ not acceptable is given at Annexure-V.
Last date and time for submission of online applications is 18-10-2022 (23:00).
Candidates are advised in their own interest to submit the online application much before the closing date and not to wait till the last date to avoid the possibility of disconnection/ inability or failure to login to the SSC website on account of heavy load on the website during the closing days.
The Commission will not be responsible for the candidates not being able to submit their applications within the last date on account of the aforesaid reasons or for any other reason beyond the control of the Commission.
Before submission of the online application, candidates must check through Preview/ Print option that they have filled correct details in each field of the form.
Mode of Selection :
The result of the Computer Based Examination will be declared by the Staff Selection Commission. For the categories having up to 10 vacancies, the candidates who come within the range of merit of Computer Based Examination equal to 5 times the number of vacancies in each category i.e. General (UR)/SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwBD and Ex-servicemen (category–wise) will be shortlisted for appearing in the document verification. For the categories having more than 10 vacancies, candidates in the ratio of 3 times the number of vacancies, subject to minimum 50 candidates, will be shortlisted for appearing in the DV.
On receipt of DV data from IMD, final result will be processed and declared by the Commission on its website. A reserve panel/ additional list of 50% candidates (category wise) will be prepared by the Commission in addition to the number of candidates selected as per notified vacancies. The list of reserve panel will be provided to IMD in a sealed cover and will not be uploaded on the website. The reserve panel will be valid for a period of one and half years from the date of declaration of result.
SC, ST, OBC and PH candidates, who are selected on their own merit without relaxed standards, along with candidates belonging to other communities, will not be adjusted against the reserved share of vacancies. Such SC, ST, OBC and PH candidates will be accommodated against the general/unreserved vacancies in the post as per their position in the overall Merit List or vacancies earmarked for their category, whichever is advantageous to them. The reserved vacancies will be filled up separately from amongst the eligible SCs, STs, OBCs and PH candidates.
A suitable person with benchmark disability (PwBD) who qualifies this examination under UR standards can be appointed against an unreserved vacancy. 15.5 Reserved category candidate who qualifies on the basis of relaxed standards viz. age limit, experience or qualifications, permitted number of chances in written examination, extended zone of consideration, etc. will be counted against reserved vacancies and not against UR vacancies subject to fitness of such candidate for selection. Such candidates may also be recommended at the relaxed standards to fill up the number of vacancies reserved for them, irrespective of their rank in the order of merit. In so far as cases of Ex-Serviceman are concerned, deduction from the age of Ex-Servicemen is permissible and such exemption will not be termed as relaxed standards in regard to age.
Success in the examination confers no right of appointment unless Government is satisfied after such enquiry as may be considered necessary that the candidate is suitable in all respects for appointment to the service/post.
Candidates applying for the examination should ensure that they fulfill all the eligibility conditions for admission to the examination. Their admission at all stages of the examination will be purely provisional, subject to their satisfying the prescribed eligibility conditions. If, on verification, at any time before or after the written examination, it is found that they do not fulfill any of the eligibility conditions, their candidature for the examination will be cancelled by the Commission.
