Sachin Tendulkar : UNICEF AMBASSADOR

  • Ace cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who recently retired from cricket, has started the second innings of his life as the UNICEF ambassador for South Asia. Tendulkar in the capacity of a good will ambassador will aid UNICEF for the next two years, in promoting hygiene and sanitation in South Asian countries including India.

  • According to UNICEF, almost half the population in India defecates in the open and 68 lakh people practice open defecation in South Asian countries of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan, defecate in open.

Champions League: Convincing wins for Man U, City, Real

  • Manchster United and Manchester City recorded convincing wins in the group stage of Champions League football while a 10-man Real Madrid cruised past Turkish side Galatasaray.
  • David Moyes’ men secured their berth in the knockout stage following a dominant and clinical display on the road at the packed BayArena. Wayne Rooney was clearly the man of the match as he had large shares on victory owing to four assists.
  • Real Madrid were able to forget the absence of top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo to defeat Turkish side Galatasaray 4-1 in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid. The win will assure they will finish top of their Champions League qualifying group and thus assure a theoretically easier draw when the knockout stage of the competition kicks off in the New Year.

Post-Polls, IB warns of rise in Naxal activity

  • With the latest Maoist offensive claiming lives of four CRPF personnel in Bastar, Intelligence Bureau has alerted security forces, asking them to be extra cautious following inputs of major strikes in southern Chhattisgarh after 'peaceful' assembly election.

  • According to the advisory, the IB has called for heightening security around police stations, check posts and camps and conducting area domination within five kilometres radius of these places. It also asked police jawans and officials to refrain from roaming alone in the region.

  • Carefully mobilising on the tip-off about the movement of Naxals as they may lay ambush in those areas are other precautions given to security forces, according to the IB document.

Arrest warrant issued against Tejpal

  • Sarika Faldesai, Judicial Magistrate First Class in Panaji, Goa, has issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Tehelka Editor-in-Chief Tarun Tejpal, accused of sexually assaulting a journalist.
  • Police approached the magistrate with the request in this regard after Mr. Tejpal failed to appear before them by 3 p.m. , despite being summoned.
  • Police rejected Mr. Tejpal’s request for more time to appear before them as per the summons served on him earlier.
  • Three hours ahead of the deadline, Mr. Tejpal sent a fax message, seeking exemption from appearance on the plea that he needed time to travel to Goa.
  • It is learnt that Mr. Tejpal is planning to move a bail application in a sessions court in Goa. It is likely to be moved before a single-judge Bench (criminal matters) soon.
  • Earlier in the day, managing editor of Tehelka Shoma Chaudhury resigned from the post, saying she did not want questions raised about her integrity to tarnish the image of the weekly.

Fodder scam: SC issues notice to CBI on Lalu’s bail plea

  • The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the bail plea of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad, who is undergoing a five-year jail term after being convicted in a fodder scam case, and sought response from CBI.
  • A bench of Chief Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi directed CBI, which is the prosecuting agency in the fodder scam case, to file its response within two weeks and posted the case for hearing to December 13.
  • Senior advocate Ram Jethmalani, appearing for Mr. Prasad, submitted that the RJD chief was one among the 44 accused convicted in the case but he is the only person whose bail plea was rejected by the trial court and the High Court.
