Piyush Goyal to attend IPEF meet, strengthen trade ties with the US

Union minister of commerce and industry Piyush Goyal is visiting the United States next week to attend the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF) ministerial and participate in the India-US Strategic Partnership Forum.
IPEF was launched by the US along with partner countries of the Indo-Pacific region on May 23 at Tokyo. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the launch event along with US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and other leaders from partner countries. Initial partners of the forum are Australia, Brunei, India, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
According to a White House statement issued on May 23, together IPEF members represent 40% of world GDP. Elaborating on its purpose, it said: “IPEF will strengthen our ties in this critical region to define the coming decades for technological innovation and the global economy. Framework will create a stronger, fairer, more resilient economy for families, workers, and businesses in the United States and in the Indo-Pacific region.” The first and the second meetings of IPEF were held in May and July this year.
IPEF is structured around four pillars – Trade, Supply Chains, Clean Economy, and Fair Economy, the commerce ministry said in a statement adding that the minister will visit San Francisco and Los Angeles from September 5 to September 10. Goyal is also minister for consumer affairs, food and public distribution and textiles.
Goyal will also hold bilateral meetings with US Secretary of Commerce, US Trade Representative (USTR) and ministers from other IPEF partner countries on the sidelines of the IPEF ministerial, it added.
“Regular exchanges at the leadership-level have been an integral element of the expanding bilateral engagement. The outcomes emerging from these visits have been instrumental in further strengthening the multifaceted ties between the two countries,” the statement said.

Donald Trump search inventory reveals new details from FBI seizure

Along with highly classified government documents, the FBI agents who searched former President Donald Trump’s Florida estate found dozens of empty folders marked classified but with nothing inside and no explanation of what might have been there, according to a more detailed inventory of the seized material made public.
The inventory compiled by the Justice Department reveals in general terms the contents of 33 boxes and containers taken from Trump’s office and a storage room at Mar-a-Lago during the Aug. 8 search. Though the inventory does not describe the content of the documents, it shows the extent to which classified information — including material at the top-secret level — was stashed in boxes at the home and mixed among newspapers, magazines, clothing and other personal items.
The inventory makes clear for the first time the volume of unclassified government documents at the home even though presidential records were to have been turned over to the National Archives and Records Administration. The Archives had tried unsuccessfully for months to secure their return from Trump and then contacted the FBI after locating classified information in a batch of 15 boxes it received in January.
The Justice Department has said there was no secure space at Mar-a-Lago for sensitive government secrets, and has opened a criminal investigation focused on their retention there and on what it says were efforts in the past several months to obstruct the probe. It is also investigating potential violations of a law that criminalizes the mutilation or concealment of government records, classified or not.

Bank of Baroda raises Rs 2,474 cr by issuing bonds through stock exchanges

Bank of Baroda has raised Rs 2,474 crore by issuing bonds at the rate of 7.88 per cent through stock exchanges.
The bank allotted a total of 2,474 unsecured Basel III additional tier I perpetual non-convertible bonds, valuing Rs 1 crore each on Friday.
Perpetual bonds carry no maturity date and they can be treated as equity rather than debt. Even as such bonds are not redeemable, they pay a steady flow of interest forever.
The bonds are rated AAA with stable outlook by Icra and India Ratings, the bank said in a regulatory filing.

NASA to re-attempt launch of Artemis 1 moon rocket

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Saturday will attempt to launch its uncrewed moon mission Artemis 1 in the two-hour launch window opening at 2:17 pm ET (11:47pm as per Indian time). This second attempt is planned after the first was called off as the space launch system developed a technical snag.
Although the launch has been scheduled, the meteorologists at NASA have raised concern of scattered rain showers. They have predicted only 60 per cent favourable weather at the start of the launch window, however, it will subsequently improve to 80 per cent at the end.
NASA has said that it will take the final call for the launch after inspecting the prevailing condition. “The mission management team will meet early in the morning (by noon as per Indian time), Saturday, Sept. 3 and give the final determination for a “go” or “no-go” decision to begin tanking operations,” an update from NASA reads.
Before launch, the engine was to be conditioned i.e. to be bled with liquid hydrogen and oxygen.
This problem can be simply understood as that one of the four main engines could not be properly chilled ahead of its ignition.
Crew came with a troubleshooting plant but could not solve the problem. After the troubleshooting didn’t work, the launch director asked the hydrogen team to come up with a fresh strategy to address the problem.

Shaji Prabhakaran appointed new secretary general of AIFF

Delhi Football president and long-time administrator ShajiPrabhakaran was on Saturday appointed the new secretary general of the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The appointment, which was on expected lines, was carried out by the newly-formed executive committee of the AIFF, at the helm of which is presidentKalyanChaubey.
The decision was taken during the new dispensation's first executive committee at the Football House, and was chaired by Chaubey. The president proposed Prabhakaran's name as the new secretary general of the AIFF, which was unanimously approved by all the members, the AIFF said in a statement.
Prabhakaran, who was in the forefront of the group of people who wanted a change in the functioning of the AIFF, did not contest the apex body's elections here on Friday, when Chaubey became the federation's first player president in its 85-year existence. Welcoming the members, the AIFF president said: "This is the first time that six former eminent players are part of the Committee as per the order of the Honourable Supreme Court.
