India to get record number of doctors in next 10 years: Modi

Prime Minister NarendraModi on Friday said that the country will get a record number of doctors over the next 10 years due to the central government’s policy of establishing at least one medical college in every district.
Speaking after virtually inaugurating the 200-bed KK Patel Super Speciality hospital in Gujarat’s Bhuj, the PM said: “Modern and critical health care infrastructure is being provided at district and block level through the Ayushman Health Infrastructure Mission. A lot of new super speciality hospitals along with new AIIMS are being constructed. The goal of having at least one medical college in every district and ensuring that medical education was in reach of everyone will result in the country getting a record number of doctors in the next 10 years.”
He also warned people to “be watchful” against the “lurking” coronavirus disease.
The hospital, constructed by Shree KutchiLeva Patel Samaj, is the first charitable super speciality facility in the region that will provide quality medical treatment for the people of Kutch along with lakhs of soldiers, paramilitary personnel and traders, the PM added.
Talking about the expansion of medical infrastructure in Gujarat, Modi said that there are nine All India Institute of Medical Science, more than three dozen medical colleges in the state and around 6,000 medical seats, asserting that two decades ago, Gujarat had just nine medical colleges with around 1,100 MBBS seats. “Now, the state has one AIIMS and over three dozen medical colleges. Earlier, only 1,000 students used to get admission to medical colleges in Gujarat, now around 6,000 students get admission in these colleges. AIIMS in Rajkot has started admitting 50 students from 2021,” Modi said.
He added that the Civil hospital in Ahmedabad will soon be getting a 1500-bed facility for mother and child care. “Leaving the devastation caused by the earthquake behind, the people of Bhuj and Kutch are now writing a new destiny for the region with their hard work,” he said.

Residents of Shanghai scuffle with police over Covid policy

The city of 25 million and China’s economic engine room has become the heart of the country’s biggest outbreak since the peak of the first virus wave in Wuhan over two years ago, rattling the strict zero-Covid policy.
Shanghai residents scuffled with hazmat-suited police ordering them to surrender their homes to Covid-19 patients, videos on social media showed, providing a rare glimpse into rising discontent in the megacity over China’s inflexible virus response.
The city of 25 million and China’s economic engine room has become the heart of the country’s biggest outbreak since the peak of the first virus wave in Wuhan over two years ago, rattling the strict zero-Covid policy. Some stuck in Shanghai, locked down since early April, have flooded social media with complaints of food shortages and of over-zealous officialdom forcing them into state quarantine, challenging China’s ‘Great Firewall’ of censorship which wipes dissenting views from the internet almost as soon as they appear.
Late Thursday, videos circulated showing residents outside a compound shouting at ranks of officials holding shields labelled “police”, as the officers tried to break through their line.
In one clip, police appear to make several arrests as the residents accuse them of “hitting people”.
The incident began after authorities ordered 39 households to move out of their homes to house virus patients in the development, according to Zhangjiang Group, the developer of the housing complex.
In one live-streamed video, a woman can be heard weeping and asking “why are they taking an old person away?” as officials appeared to put someone into a car. Zhangjiang Group said it had compensated the tenants and moved them into other units in the same compound.

'I made an offer': Musk bids $43.4 bn for Twitter; company says 'will review'

Musk offered $54.20 a share, which values the social media firm at $43.4 billion, in a filing dated Wednesday April 13 with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Twitter's board said it would carefully review what it termed Musk's "unsolicited, non-binding" offer and decide on a course of action that was "in the best interest of the Company and all Twitter stockholders."
Musk's latest move toward Twitter comes just days after he turned down a seat on the board following his acquisition of a 9.2 percent stake in the microblogging platform.
"I invested in Twitter as I believe in its potential to be the platform for free speech around the globe, and I believe free speech is a societal imperative for a functioning democracy," Musk said in his filing.
"However, since making my investment I now realize the company will neither thrive nor serve this societal imperative in its current form," he said.
"Twitter needs to be transformed as a private company. As a result, I am offering to buy 100% of Twitter for $54.20 per share in cash, a 54% premium over the day before I began investing in Twitter."

Indian GM R. Pragyananand wins Reykjavik Open Chess Tournament in Iceland

Young Indian Grandmaster R Pragganandhaa on Tuesday won the prestigious Reykjavik Open chess tournament here with 7.5 points from nine rounds.
The 16-year-old Pragganandhaa defeated compatriot GM D Gukesh in the final round to emerge sole winner.
Praggnanandhaa turned things around in the all-Indian battle after his opponent blundered when he appeared to be losing.
He also posted four other wins, including the one over American Abhimanyu Mishra, who last year became the then youngest Grandmaster at the age of 12 years and four months.
Praggnanandhaa (ELO 2624) gained 13.2 ELO points from the triumph.
