6 lakh villages will get internet connectivity by 2024
- Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Rajeev Chandrashekhar mentioned six lakh villages of the nation will get internet connectivity underneath the Bharat Net programme by 2024.
- Speaking to mediapersons in Shivamogga on August 17, Rajeev Chandrashekhar mentioned, as of now, round 2.8 lakh villages have gotten internet facility. The remaining villages could be lined within the coming years. “Our aim is to provide internet facility to every household, and every member in a family should access the internet with a low-cost device,” he mentioned.

RBI slaps 1 crorefine on co-operative Rabobank UA
- Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said it has imposed a penalty of Rs 1 crore on CooperatieveRabobank U.A. for deficiencies in regulatory compliances.
- The penalty has been imposed for contravention of certain provisions of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 and directions related to 'transfer to reserve funds'.
- RBI said it conducted a statutory Inspection for Supervisory Evaluation (ISE) of the bank with reference to the bank's financial position as on March 31, 2020.
- Examination of the risk assessment report pertaining to the same, revealed contravention of the provisions of the Banking Regulation Act and the directions issued by RBI.
- A show cause notice was issued to the bank.
- "After considering the bank's reply to the notice, oral submission made during the personal hearing and examination of additional submissions made by the bank, RBI came to the conclusion that the charge of contravention of... provisions of the Act and RBI directions was substantiated and warranted imposition of monetary penalty on the bank," RBI said in a statement.
- In another statement, RBI said a penalty of Rs 5 lakh has been imposed on Village Financial Services Ltd, Kolkata, for non-compliance with certain provisions of the Know Your Customer Directions, 2016.
- The central bank, however, said the penalties are based on the deficiencies in regulatory compliance and is not intended to pronounce upon the validity of any transaction or agreement entered into by the banks with their customers.
- "India needs a holistic and integrated approach in infrastructure construction along with modern infrastructure. In the near future, India is going to come out with PradhanMantriGatishakti National Plan and launch it," he said in his address to the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on India's 75th Independence Day.
- PM Modi said the over ₹ 100 lakh crore scheme will bring new employment opportunities for lakhs of youth.
- Gatishakti, he said, will be a national master plan which will lay the foundation of the overall infrastructure in the country and give an integrated and holistic path to the economy.
- PM Modi said as of now there is no harmony in modes of transport in the country.
- Gatishakti, he said, will break the silos and bottlenecks.

INS Tabar participated in Exercise Konkan 2021
- The Indian Navy’s Talwar-class frigate, INS Tabar, is taking part in exercises with the British Royal Navy.
- It is currently docked into Portsmouth harbour and started the annual bilateral exercise Konkan 2021 on 12 August.
- The frigate conducted a maritime interception exercise with the Royal Navy’s Type 23 frigate HMS Westminster off Portsmouth.
- Exercise Konkan 2021 will be continued between INS Tabar and HMS Westminster after the departure of the former from Portsmouth.
- On entering the harbour, the Final Planning Conference for Exercise Konkan 2021 was held in non-contact form between the Ops Teams of Tabar and Westminster.
- Royal Navy fleet commander vice-admiral Jerry Kyd said: “I am delighted to be visiting INS Tabar while she is alongside in Portsmouth, and grateful for the opportunity to meet with the High Commissioner.
- “The Royal Navy enjoys a mutually beneficial relationship with our Indian colleagues, and one which runs deep and is highly valued.
- “A recent engagement encompassing ten ships and two submarines in the Bay of Bengal is a fantastic example of the level of cooperation between our two nations at sea.”

Raunak Sadhwani wins 2021 Spilimbergo Open Chess Tournament
- Young Indian Grandmaster RaunakSadhwani, 15, on Sunday emerged winner in the 19th Spilimbergo Open chess tournament here with seven points from nine rounds.
- Sadhwani (Elo 2579) remained undefeated in the tourney, notching up five wins and four draws. Seeded fourth, the Indian faced five GMs in the event and beat Oskar Wieczorek of Poland and drew his games against the four others.
- His wins came against Italian JoshuaedeCappelletto, AronPasti of Hungary, LoreznoLodici of Italy and France’s LoicTravadon.
