India's first cryptogamic (non-seed plant) garden inaugurated at Deoban in Chakrata town of Dehradun district

  • It is located in the Chakrata town of Dehradun.
  • A  garden at Deoban in Chakratahouses almost 76 different species of cryptogams, a primitive plant species found since the Jurassic era.
  • Because of its low pollution levels and moist conditions which are conducive for the growth of these species, Deoban is chosen.
  • Deoban also has pristine majestic forests of Deodar and Oak which create a natural habitat for cryptogamic species.
  • A cryptogam (scientific name Cryptogamae) is a plant or a plant-like organism that reproduces by spores, without flowers or seeds.
  • “Cryptogamae” means “hidden reproduction”, referring to the fact that no seed is produced.
  • Other names, such as “thallophytes”, “lower plants”, and “spore plants” are also occasionally used.
  • The best-known groups of cryptogams are algae, lichens, mosses and ferns, and also includes non-photosynthetic organisms traditionally classified as plants, such as fungi, slime molds, and bacteria.
  • Algae comprises the most primitive organisms which are predominantly aquatic, both in marine as well as freshwater habitats.
  • Ferns are the largest living group of primitive vascular plants while fungi is a kingdom of usually multicellular eukaryotic organisms that are heterotrophs.
  • Bryophytes are the simplest and primitive land plants that occupy an intermediate position between algae and pteridophytes.
  • Lichens are a complex life form that is a symbiotic partnership of two separate organisms, a fungus and an algae.
  • Cryptogams are considered among the best bioindicators, as they grow only at places without pollution and with ample soil moisture.

NARCL is listed with 74.6 crore paid-up capital

  • The National Asset Reconstruction Co. Ltd (NARCL), or the so-called bad bank, has been registered in Mumbai with a paid-up capital of ₹74.6 crore, according to filings with the Registrar of Companies (RoC).
  • The bad bank will be headed by PadmakumarMadhavan Nair, a stressed assets expert from State Bank of India (SBI), as the managing director. The other directors are Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) chief executive Sunil Mehta, SBI deputy managing director SaleeSukumaran Nair and Canara Bank’s representative Ajit Krishnan Nair.
  • Touted as a one-stop solution to India’s burgeoning bad loan menace, NARCL was set up on 7 July with an authorized capital of ₹100 crore and has been classified as a “Union government company”, the RoC filings showed.
  • The setting up of the bad bank is part of the government’s efforts to clean up India’s financial system, which is sitting on one of the biggest piles of bad assets in the world. Transferring soured loans to NARCL will allow banks to cut their losses and renew lending.
  • “Now that the company has been set up, we have to seek an ARC licence from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and are preparing the documents for that. Depending on when the approvals come, NARCL will shortly start operations,” said a person aware of the development, seeking anonymity.

ISRO plans to launch geo imaging satellite

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is getting back into launch activity fully at Sriharikota spaceport with the planned orbiting of geo imaging satellite GISAT-1 on board GSLV-F10 rocket on August 12.
  • It's going to be only the second launch of the Bengaluru-headquartered space agency in the COVID-19-hit 2021.
  • ISRO successfully launched PSLV-C51 mission on February 28 with Brazil's earth observation satellite Amazonia-1 and 18 co-passengers, including some built by students, on board.
  • The 2,268-kg GISAT-1 was originally slated to be launched from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district, about 100 kms north of Chennai, on March 5 last year but was postponed a day before the blast-off due to technical reasons.
  • It was scheduled for March 28 this year but a "minor issue" with the satellite forced its postponement.
  • The launch was later expected in April and then in May but the campaign could not be taken up due to lockdown in parts of the country triggered by the second wave of the pandemic.
  • "We have tentatively planned the GSLV-F10 launch on August 12, at 05.43 am, subject to weather conditions", .
