The Uttar Pradesh Population (Control, Stabilization and Welfare) Bill, 2021 introduced

  • The new population policy aims to tackle a key issue in Uttar Pradesh ahead of polls next year. Population control has emerged as key focus areas for the Yogi Adityanath ahead of the elections. The opposition has, however, slammed the BJP government for the move.
  • On World Population Day, Uttar Pradesh government announced a new population policy for 2021-2030 on Sunday. The new policy has provisions to give incentives to those who help in population control.
  • The population policy was unveiled ahead of the elections in the state next year. The issue has emerged as one of the main focus areas in the state ahead of assembly polls.
  • The opposition has slammed the BharatiyaJanata Party (BJP) government in the state, saying it wants to "murder the democracy" in Uttar Pradesh.
  • A draft bill on population control has already been uploaded on UP government's website, and suggestions invited till July 19. If enacted, the provisions of the proposed legislation titled The Uttar Pradesh Population (Control, Stabilization and Welfare) Bill, 2021 will come into force after one year from the date of publication in the gazette.

Afghan forces repel Taliban assault on provincial capital

  • Afghan security forces, with the help of air strikes, repelled an assault by Taliban fighters on the provincial centre of a key northern province bordering Tajikistan on Sunday, officials said.
  • The Taliban assault was the latest in a string of offensives that has seen insurgents capture territory across Afghanistan as U.S.-led foreign forces are in the final stages of withdrawing troops after almost 20 years of fighting.
  • "The enemy's offensive attacks were repelled, and they suffered heavy and unprecedented casualties, as a result of which 55 enemy soldiers were killed and 90 were wounded," the governor of Takhar province Abdullah Qarluq said.
  • Reuters could not independently confirm his account.
  • More than a dozen Taliban fighters were killed in air strikes by the Afghan Air Force on hideouts on the outskirts of Takhar's provincial center, Taluqan, Afghanistan's defence ministry said on Twitter.
  • "The Taliban attacked Taluqan from four directions last night (Saturday), but were faced with strong resistance from security forces and (local) people," Khalil Asir, spokesman for Takhar Police Command, told Reuters.

Federal Bank gets RBI nod to re-appoint ShyamSrinivasan as MD & CEO

  • Private sector Federal Bank said it has received approval from the RBI to re-appoint Srinivasan as its MD and CEO for three years.
  • Srinivasan took charge as MD and CEO of the lender on September 23, 2010.
  • "We wish to inform you that the approval from Reserve Bank of India has been received on July 9, 2021 for the re-appointment of Srinivasan as the MD & CEO of the bank for a period of three years with effect from September 23, 2021 till September 22, 2024," Federal Bank said in a regulatory filing.
  • Earlier in July 2020, the South-based lender had received RBI's nod for reappointment of Srinivasan as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer till September 22, 2021.
  • He had joined Federal Bank with the experience of over 20 years with leading multinational banks in India, Middle East and South East Asia. He has significant expertise in retail lending, wealth management and small and medium enterprises (SME) banking, it said.

Sirisha Bandla becomes 3rd Indian-American woman to fly into space

  • Virgin Galactic's VSS Unity, as the spaceplane is called, took off for the 1.5-hour mission above New Mexico from the Spaceport America launch facility at 10:40 a.m. ET following a 90-minute delay due to bad weather.
  • Aeronautical engineer SirishaBandla on Sunday became the third Indian-American woman to fly into space when she joined British billionaire Richard Branson on Virgin Galactic's first fully-crewed successful suborbital test flight from the US state of New Mexico.
  • Virgin Galactic's VSS Unity, as the spaceplane is called, took off for the 1.5-hour mission above New Mexico from the Spaceport America launch facility at 10:40 a.m. ET following a 90-minute delay due to bad weather.
  • Bandla joined Branson and four others on board Virgin Galactic’sSpaceShipTwo Unity to make a journey to the edge of space from New Mexico. They reached an altitude of about 88 kilometers over the New Mexico desert - enough to see the curvature of the Earth. The crew experienced a few minutes of weightlessness before making a gliding descent back to Earth.

Australia's Ashleigh Barty wins women's singles title at Wimbledon

  • Top-seeded Ashleigh Barty became the first Australian to win the Wimbledon women's singles tennis title in 41 years on Saturday in London.
  • Barty defeated the Czech Republic's Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3 to claim the title in the first three-setter in a Wimbledon final since 2012.
  • It's the second Grand Slam title for Barty, who won the French Open in 2019.
