Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw embraces engineer on finding out they are alumnus of the same college

  • AshwiniVaishnaw, who took charge as the Union railway minister on July 8 after the cabinet reshuffle, was seen embracing an engineer form the Indian Railways signal department after finding out they both belonged to MBM Engineering College in Jodhpur.
  • In a video clip, the new minister can be seen embracing a Railways employee, after someone from the department pointed out that they both belong to the same college. Vaishnaw can be heard saying “Come, let us hug”.
  • Vaishnaw, a former Indian Administrative Services officer of the 1994-batch, graduated with a B.Tech degree from MBM Engineering College in Jodhpur and a M.Tech degree from Indian Institute Technology, Kanpur. He is also an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of business.
  • His classmate from Wharton, Nipun Mehta, who is the chief executive officer of a fintech start-up Ula was all praises for his batchmate. He told Bloomberg that “Ashwini was one of the most brilliant people in my Wharton MBA class. He was older than most of us and had accomplished so much before coming to Wharton so the class learned quite a lot from him.

China to safeguard its firms against US blacklist

  • The Biden administration is expected as early  to add at least 10 more Chinese companies and other entities to the list over alleged human rights abuses and high-tech surveillance in the Chinese region of Xinjiang
  • China will take all necessary measures to protect its companies, the foreign ministry said on Friday when asked about a Reuters report that the United States is set to add more Chinese firms to its economic blacklist.
  • The Biden administration is expected as early as Friday to add at least 10 more Chinese companies and other entities to the list over alleged human rights abuses and high-tech surveillance in the Chinese region of Xinjiang, the report said.
  • Foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin made the comments at a regular news conference in Beijing.

India needs technical regulations to ensure toys meet global standards: PHDCCI

  • There is a need to ensure manufacturing of quality toys that meet global standards and attract large-scale investments in infrastructure and research & development (R&D) to promote the growth of the industry, PHDCCI said on Friday.
  • India should come out with more quality control orders and technical regulations for different products to check inferior and low-quality imports from China, industry chamber PHDCCI President Sanjay Aggarwal said in a statement.
  • "There is a need for large-scale investments in infrastructure, increased investments in innovation and research and development (R&D), and massive skill development, among others, to ensure long-term competitiveness of the toy industry and enhance the image of brand India globally," he said.
  • He added that focus should be put upon building a value chain ecosystem of toys in the country instead of importing components and doing assembling activities.
  • This will increase India's economies of scale, reduce cost, ensure quality and dependability, increase traceability and help in maintaining speed of delivery, he said.

BRICS member countries agreed to a Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) led BRICS Innovation Cooperation Action Plan (2021-24) proposed by India

  • BRICS member countries have agreed to a Science, Technology and Innovation (STI)-led BRICS Innovation Cooperation Action Plan (2021-24) proposed by India during 12th meeting of the grouping's science & technology steering committee, the government said on Friday.
  • India had proposed facilitating sharing of experiences of each other’s innovation ecosystem and networking of innovators and entrepreneurs. The details will be worked out by BRICS Science, Technology Innovation Entrepreneurship partnership (STIEP) working group. It was agreed that the proposal may be forwarded to BRICS STIEP working group through the respective country's STI focal point, the ministry of S&T said in a statement.
  • Department of Science and Technology, India, had hosted the meeting on 8 July. Scientific ministries and agencies of all BRICS countries participated in it. BRICS officials discussed in detail about the thematic areas for this year’s call for proposals at the meeting and unanimously agreed for collaboration in ten thematic areas.

Japan declares emergency in Tokyo due to Kovid-19

  • The Olympic Games are going to start on July 23 in Tokyo, the capital of Japan. But the increasing cases of the Covid-19 in Tokyo have caused another setback for the Japanese government and the organizers of the Olympic Games. 
  • In light of rising Covid-19 cases, a meeting with experts was called in which government officials proposed to impose a state of emergency in Japan from next Monday till August 22.
