Andhra Pradesh launches IT policy for 2021-24

  • The Andhra Pradesh government on Wednesday came out with the new 'AP Information Technology Policy 2021-24' that is expected to generate more than 55,000 jobs over the next three years.
  • For this purpose, a robust and holistic business environment would be created and the IT, Electronics and Communications Department would be transformed into a revenue centre to achieve self-sustenance.
  • The State Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, approved the new policy, which is also expected to create 1.65 lakh indirect employment thereby ensuring a holistic eco system development.
  • The policy would be in force till March 31, 2024.
  • The State would earn a revenue of Rs 783 crore over 10 years in the form of various taxes, while the direct employment alone is expected to infuse over Rs 2,200 crore every year, leading to the overall growth of the economy through multiplier effect, according to the policy note.
  • It said the new IT Policy links incentive disbursement to realisation of committed direct employment ensuring transparent and effective utilisation of public funds.

Pakistan Army inducts China-made VT-4 battle tanks

  • The Pakistan Army has formally inducted the first batch of the China-made VT-4 battle tanks into its armoury.
  • Produced by Chinese state-owned armoured vehicle manufacturer, Norinco, the delivery of VT-4 tanks from the manufacturer began in April last year. Pakistan is the third country to have bought these tanks from China after Thailand and Nigeria.
  • The Army’s media affairs wing in a statement said that Commander Mangla Corps, Lieutenant General ShaheenMehmood, on Wednesday visited the Armoured Division and inspected the first batch of VT-4 tanks.
  • General Mehmood also witnessed the mobility and maneuverability test of the tanks.
  • Earlier, the Army after its on field tests in September last year had said the tanks would be employed in an offensive role by strike formations after induction.

Finance Minister to issue appreciation certificates to GST payers

  • This year on GST Day, the fourth anniversary of the tax reform, India commended tax officers in dealing with GST fraud and said that in the last four years the taxpayer base has almost doubled from 66.25 lakh to 1.28 crore.
  • India is marking 'GST Day' on Thursday, i.e. July 1 to mark the completion of four years since the rollout of the historic tax reform. Speaking on the occasion, Union finance minister NirmalaSitharaman on Thursday said that enhanced revenue collection under the new tax regime should be considered as the "new normal". The finance ministry is on this day issuing certificates of appreciation to 54,439 GST payers for timely filing of returns and a cash payment of the tax. More than 88% of these taxpayers are from micro, small and medium enterprises.
  • Commendable work has been done in the year gone by both in the area of facilitation and enforcement with numerous cases of fraudulent dealers and ITC being registered. The enhanced revenue collection in recent months should now be the new normal," Sitharaman said.
  • GST revenue collection in India has remained over the ₹100,000 croremark for eight months in a row with as much as ₹102,702 collected in the month of May alone, the Union ministry of finance had said earlier last month. 

Cabinet approves outlay of Rs 3 trillion for power reform scheme

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the marquee ₹3.03 trillion power distribution company (discom) reform scheme, wherein the Centre’s share will be ₹97,631 crore.
  • The reforms-based result-linked power distribution sector scheme, to be applicable till 2025-26, was announced in the union budget presented earlier this year and will subsume programmes such as the Integrated Power Development Scheme and the DeenDayalUpadhyaya Gram JyotiYojana.
  • The funds will be released to discoms subject to them meeting reform-related milestones, with state-run Power Finance Corporation (PFC) and Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) nominated as nodal agencies for implementation of the scheme.
  • Mint reported about the contours of the scheme on 16 December last year. While announcing the relief package in the wake of second wave of coronavirus pandemic, finance minister NirmalaSitharaman on Monday said that the Centre’s share towards the discom reform scheme will be ₹97,631 crore.

Abhimanyu Mishra of America became the youngest chess grandmaster at 12 years four months and 25 days

  • At 12 years, four months and 25 days, he obliterated the long-standing record held by Sergey Karjakin, who was 12 years and seven months old when he attained the title. Three years ago, India’s R Praggnanandhaa had almost surpassed him, but missed the opportunity by a whisker. As did many assaults on the 19-year-old record until Abhimanyu’s moment.
  • Abhimanyu has been in the Hungarian capital since April, in pursuit of the record. He had attained the first and second GM norms in April and May, but the third had seemed elusive with time catching up and fewer tournaments in the horizon. He had to wait till mid-July for another shot at the record, but for this tournament.
