::NATIONAL::

InterModal Station in Nagpur will be ecological & environment friendly: NitinGadkari

  • Union Minister for Road Transport NitinGadkari has said that the InterModal Station (IMS) to be constructed by the National Highways Authority (NHAI) near Ajni railway station in Nagpur will be ecological and environment friendly
  • Addressing a press conference after holding a review meeting on the IMS project in Nagpur on Sunday, Union Minister NitinGadkari said, it will help in realizing the dream of a clean, pollution free and green Nagpur.
  • The first phase of this ambitious project will focus on land acquisition and rehabilitation work. The Ministry of Road Transport has allocated 1200 crore rupees for this project. The roads, railways, metro, broad gauge metro as well as the newly proposed Nag river waterway will come together and become an intermodal station near Ajni railway station for transporting passengers seamlessly from all routes.
  • Acquisition of some land from Railways, Irrigation Department, Food Corporation of India and Government of Maharashtra is required for this inter modal station. Union Minister NitinGadkari also directed the concerned authorities to take immediate action for the acquisition of the required land.
  • The Minister also instructed concerned project companies to use CNG-powered machinery in the construction of the project, which will reduce the use of diesel and petrol. 
  • The project will provide employment to about 10,000 youths and will also provide food courts, retail stores and other facilities to the general public at low rates.

::INTERNATIONAL::

Military seizes power in Myanmar, announces 1 year emergency

  • The Myanmar Military Tatmadaw has announced a one year state of emergency in the country.
  • The Vice President  MyintSwe has been made the acting President and all powers have been transferred to the Commander in Chief Min AungHlaing. The announcement was made on Monday on the military backed TV Myawaddy channel.
  • The Military said  that the leaders have been detained for committing fraud in the national elections held on Nov. 8, reports Reuters. 
  • The development follows early morning detention of the State Counsellor Aung San SuuKyi, President Win Myint and other senior leaders from the ruling party National League for Democracy (NLD) by the military.
  • In the meanwhile, the US has expressed alarm at the arrest of State Counsellor of Myanmar Aung San SuuKyi and other civilian officials. A statement issued by the White House said that the US is monitoring the situation closely and urged the military to release those detained and adhere to democratic norms. The US has said that it opposes any attempt to alter the outcome of the recent elections. It warned that it will take action against those responsible if these steps are not reversed.
  • The detention comes hours before the first meeting of the newly elected parliament was to begin on Monday. The official Myanmar News agency had announced that the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the parliament PyithuHluttaw will be elected on the first day of the session starting. 

::ECONOMY::

Sitharaman replaces 'bahikhata' with tablet as Union budget goes digital

  • Budget 2021: The Finance Minister was seen carrying a tablet kept inside a red coloured cover with a golden coloured national emblem embossed on it.
  • With the Union Budget 2021 set to be delivered in paperless form for the first time, Finance Minister NirmalaSitharaman replaced the Swadeshi 'bahikhata' and switched to a tablet.
  • The Finance Minister was seen carrying a tablet kept inside a red coloured cover with a golden coloured national emblem embossed on it.
  • Dressed in a red and cream colour saree, accompanied by MoS Finance Anurag Thakur and other officials from her ministry, Sitharaman is scheduled to meet President Ram NathKovind before presenting the budget at 11 am today.
  • In 2019, Sitharaman ditched the long-standing tradition of carrying budget documents in a leather briefcase and went swadeshi with a 'bahi-khata'. She had said that the Modi government is not a "suitcase-carrying government", in an apparent jibe at the past dispensations.

::SCIENCE AND TECH::

ISRO chief inaugurates satellite developed by engineering students in Coimbatore

  • ISRO Chief K Sivan inaugurated a private satellite, developed by a group of 12 students of Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology at the cost of Rs 2.5 crore. 
  • The academic satellite will be launched on February 28 from Sriharikota Range by PSLV C-15. 
  • This is the first time that a satellite developed by a private institute. The satellite will study Internet of Things (IoT) among other subjects.

::SPORTS::

Khelo India Zanskar Winter Sports and Youth Festival 2021 concludes

  • The 13 day long Khelo India Zanskar winter sports and youth festival concluded at Zanskar Valley of the Union Territory of Ladakh.
  • The festival, first of its kind was organized by the Department of Sports & Youth Services under the Khelo India banner in collaboration with the Ladakh Tourism Department. 
  • The festival was organised to showcase potential in adventure tourism and sports and aims to open a new arena in Ladakh for adventure and economy. It is one of the biggest events that has been organised to promote winter tourism in Ladakh. The 13day long festival was started on January 18th and concluded on Saturday, January 30th 2021.
  • Member of Parliament (MP) LadakhJamyangTseringNamgyal was the chief guest on the occasion while Councillor Cha Constituency StanzinLakpa was guest of honor. 
  • Member of Parliament LadakhJamyangTseringNamgyal said that the event is a great achievement towards promoting winter sports and tourism in Ladakh. He elaborated that so far tourists would visit religious places and other sites only, but this event will change the scenario in terms of expansion of economic activities and tourism. He thanked and appreciated the role played by UT administration and other concerned departments in making the event a huge success.
  • MP said that in upcoming year the event will be prolonged for around 70 days including trekking on the Chadar Trek.
