In Manipur, AFSPA extended for a year
- Barring seven Assembly constituencies within Imphal Municipal area, the
controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958 will be extended for
another year in insurgency-hit Manipur.
- The Act will be enforced in all the districts of the State except seven
Assembly constituencies of Wangkhei, Yaiskul, Thangmeiband, Uripok,
Sagolband, Shingjamei and Khurai, all in Imphal municipal areas.
- The decision to extend the Act was taken in a Cabinet meeting chaired by
Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singhm and the act has been enforced in the state
for more than two decades after it was extended annually.
- The Act was removed from the seven Assembly constituencies about a year
ago following intense agitation demanding its withdrawal from the entire
State.
- Social activist Irom Chanu Sharmila has been on fast unto death for more
than 13 years demanding repeal of the Act after killing of 10 civilians by
Assam Rifles near Imphal airport on November 2, 2000.
- The Act gives extra powers to security forces to deal with insurgents
and if anyone wants to fight against the forces for any violation of human
rights, he or she has to get permission from the Union government.
Italian Marines case
- The case of the two Italian Marines facing trial in India for murder
would not be resolved by Christmas.
- Marines Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone were arrested for the
killing of two Indian fisherman off the coast of Kerala in February last
year. They are currently on bail pending trial and are living and working at
the Italian embassy in New Delhi.
- Italy has been waiting for a report due in December from Indian
investigators over the alleged killings.
- A media report said Indian investigators had recommended to the home
ministry that Latorre and Girone be sentenced to death.
- Italian officials have been working to secure the return of the two
Marines, who were guarding an oil tanker and claim they merely fired warning
shots into the sea in the direction of the fishermen's boat, believing they
were pirates.
- Italy disputes India's jurisdiction over the case, claming the incident
took place in international waters.
- The case sparked a major diplomatic row between the two countries when
Rome refused to return Latorre and Girone to New Delhi after they were
allowed home to vote in national elections.
- Amid escalating tension, Italy relented and sent the Marines back when
it received assurances from India that the pair would not face the death
penalty.
SC panel submits report on Law intern harassment
- The Supreme Court panel probing the complaint of a law intern who
alleged a former judge of sexually assaulting her last December had
submitted its report to the Chief Justice of India.
- The probe panel comprising of Justices R M Lodha, H L Dattu and Ranjana
Desai allegedly found that the law intern had pointed out former Justice A K
Ganguly who had sexually harassed her in December last year. The committee
had also recorded the statement of Justice Ganguly as well.
- The Committee was set up by the CJI as a fact finding panel to find out
the truthfulness of the contents of a blog in which the law intern had
highlighted the alleged sexual harassment incident involving the judge
concerned.
- The woman intern had alleged that the retired judge had misbehaved with
her in a hotel room last December.
- The contents of her blog were published in a newspaper and the committee
was asked to probe into the correctness of her statement and the alleged
incident. Supreme Court committee met eight times since Novermber 13 and
recorded the statement of law intern. The girl also submitted three
affidavits in support of her statement.
Century of medals at Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships by Indians
- Indian weightlifters has continued to break new records at the
Commonwealth Youth, Junior and Senior Championships, taking their overall
medal tally to an unprecedented 102, including 53 gold, on the penultimate
day of the event in Penang, Malaysia .
- The biggest contributors to the tally were the youth boys, who notched
up 24, including 16 gold.
- The youth girls were not too far behind with 21 medals, inclusive of a
dozen gold.
- The senior men and women have so far won 21 medals in all, nine of them
being gold.
India in Level 1 of women's FIBA U16 Asian Championship
- India has beaten Kazakhstan 84-71 to remain in Level 1 of the FIBA Asia
U16 Championship for women.
- India started off well in their match and took the lead in the first
quarter, finishing at 20-14 but Kazakhstan bounced back soon, winning the
second quarter 22-16.
- However, India returned to its winning ways in the second half and won
both the third and fourth quarters.
- Ritu Verma top scored with 24 points for the Indian team.
- Earlier, China and Japan ensured their way into the final of the
championships.
