IAS officer Durga Shankar Mishra set to be next UP chief secretary

  • Senior bureaucrat Durga Shankar Mishra was on Wednesday repatriated to the Uttar Pradesh cadre after the state government proposed to appoint him as the new chief secretary, an official order said.
  • A 1984- batch IAS officer of the UP cadre, Mishra was serving as the housing and urban affairs secretary and was scheduled to retire on 31-12-2021. 
  • “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved repatriation of Durga Shankar Mishra, IAS (UP: 1984) to his cadre for his proposed appointment as chief secretary, Uttar Pradesh, by the state government,” said an order issued by DeeptiUmashankar, secretary appointments committee of the cabinet.   • Rajendra Kumar Tiwari, a 1985-batch IAS officer, is currently serving as the state’s chief secretary. He was due to retire in February 2023. 
  • “DS Mishra will reach here on Thursday. The state government may issue his order of appointment simultaneously with the order for new posting for RK Tiwari,” said a senior state government official on condition of anonymity. 
  • Uttar Pradesh is scheduled to go to polls in the first half of 2022.

Somalia PM Roble defiant after President Farmajo suspends him

  • Mohamed Hussein Roble accused the president of trying to stage a coup, and said he would continue in office.
  • He urged the security forces to take orders from him rather than MrFarmajo.
  • Troops loyal to the president earlier failed to block Mr Roble from entering his office in the capital Mogadishu, the prime minister's allies said. 
  • The two men have been involved in a long-running power struggle, raising fears of further instability in Somalia.
  • The US embassy in Somalia urged the leaders "to refrain from provocative actions, and avoid violence".
  • Somalia has not had an effective central government since the overthrow of long-serving ruler SiadBarre in 1991. 
  • The country is marred by disputes between rival politicians and clans. It is also battling an insurgency by al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda affiliate. 
  • MrFarmajo's term officially ended in February but was extended because of disagreements over how to choose a new president. 
  • A complex election for parliament, which involves clan elders choosing MPs, has been under way since November. It was supposed to have concluded by 24 December but the deadline was missed. 
  • The two leaders have accused each other of undermining the elections.
  • MrFarmajo said he was suspending the prime minister pending the outcome of an investigation into the corruption allegations. 
  • Mr Roble was recently accused of being involved, along with other officials, in the misappropriation and theft of military-owned land in Mogadishu. He denied the allegation.
  • In a tweet after MrFarmajo's statement, the prime minister's office said he was carrying on with his day-to-day duties "as usual", and he remained committed to an "acceptable electoral process that culminates in a peaceful transfer of power". 

::ECONOMY::

Project development cells in 29 depts to fast track investment: Govt

  • The Commerce and Industry Ministry said Project Development Cells (PDCs) have been set up in 29 departments to fast track investment in coordination between the central and state governments.
  • The cells enhance the pipeline of investible projects in India and in turn increase domestic investment and foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows, it said.
  • It also said that the ministry will be organising Innovation Ecosystem week from January 10 to showcase efforts taken up for promotion of start-ups in the country.
  • The week will be organised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and will be led by the education ministry.
  • "While 55 per cent of the recognised start-ups are from Tier-1 cities and 45 per cent are from Tier-2 and 3 cities respectively," it said adding the DPIIT recognised start-ups have reported creation of close to two lakh jobs in 2021.
  • Under the Fund of Funds for Start-ups (FFS), it said, Rs 6,495 crore has been committed to 80 Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) and Rs 8,085 crorehave been invested by supported AIFs in 540 startups.
  • "For Start-up India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS), 58 incubators have been selected and Rs 232.75 crorehave been approved as grant under the scheme," it said.
  • The ministry also said that as part of digitization of old files/records, the department has scanned/digitised as many as 12,387 files containing 19,53,666 pages.
  • During the Swachhata Campaign, it said, 49,686 files have been reviewed in DPIIT and its sub-organizations. and out of that 49,449 files have been weeded out.
  • It added that more products are identified under One District One Product (ODOP) initiative, which aims at promoting production of unique products in each district that can be globally marketed.
  • "Ongoing expansion exercise entailing expansion of list from Phase-1 that consisted of 106 products from 103 districts to current Phase-2 that would consist of 739+ products covering 739 districts," the ministry said.

China launches new camera satellite with 5m resolution

  • China on Sunday launched a new satellite with a camera that can take pictures of the ground with a resolution of five meters, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA).
  • The satellite, called "Ziyuan-1 02E" or "five-meter optical satellite 02," was launched at 11:11 a.m. Beijing Time by a Long March-4C rocket from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in north China's Shanxi Province.
  • Ziyuan-1 02E weighs about 2.5 kilograms and is equipped with infrared, near-infrared and hyperspectral cameras. The cameras can take full-color panchromatic images of the Earth.
  • The satellite will work with the five-meter optical satellite 01 and shorten the revisit time of Chinese territory from three days to two days.
  • Pictures taken by the satellite duo will help engineers survey China's geological environment and search for minerals. People working in other areas like transportation, agriculture and disaster mitigation will also receive help from the pictures.
  • Launched along with the Ziyuan-1 02E was a small satellite used for teaching by Beijing 101 Middle School. The satellite is also part of a China-Africa cooperation project called "Xiwang" (Hope) to popularize science among teenagers.

Nitesh Kumar wins double gold in 4th Para-Badminton National Championship

  • World No. 7 Nitesh Kumar doubled his gold tally at the 4th Para-Badminton National Championship, which concluded in Bhubaneswar, Odisha yesterday. Haryana’s Nitesh along with his partner Tarun defeated World No. 1 Paralympic Games gold medallistPramodBhagat and ManojSarkar in straight sets 21-19, 21-11 in the Men’s doubles finals to win the gold. 
  • Earlier, Nitesh also won the gold medal in the Men’s singles category. World No 1 SL3 Para-Badminton player ParulParmar from Gujarat also secured gold while MandeepKaur from Uttarakhand won Silver and Mansi won bronze.
  • In Women Wheelchair 1 category, Alphia James from Kerala secured gold, while silver went to NeerjaGoyal from Uttarakhand. Nirmala Mehta from Uttarakhand and RanjeetaMaurya from Uttar Pradesh secured bronze. In Women Wheelchair 2 category, Ammu Mohan from Karnataka secured gold while silver went to Shabana from Punjab and PremaBiswas and SumanRawat had to settle for bronze.
