Multi-national naval exercise MILAN-22 begins in Vizag

  • The biennial multilateral naval exercise, Milan 22, was inaugurated by Union minister of state for defence Ajay Bhatt at Visakhapatnam.
  • The eleventh edition of MILAN is being hosted by the Eastern Naval Command at Vishakhapatnam for the first time. The participation from Friendly Foreign Countries includes 13 ships, 39 delegations and one Maritime Patrol Aircraft. This large congregation gives significance and potency to the word ‘MILAN’ which means “meeting” or “confluence” in Hindi. A Special Day Cover and a movie on the MILAN exercise was released by the Chief Guest to mark the occasion.
  • “MILAN endeavours to promote “Camaraderie, Cohesion, Collaboration” between like-minded Navies. This is achieved by professional interaction and experience sharing at the harbour and enhancing interoperability, including multilateral operations at sea”, stated the Navy’s official release.
  • “This edition of MILAN is larger and more complex than all previous ones, reflecting India’s growing stature as a responsible and reliable partner in the maritime domain, underscoring the Indian Navy’s commitment to maritime security across the global commons. The goals of MILAN are aligned with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of SAGAR - Security and Growth for All in the Region. MILAN 22 will play a vital role in establishing regional synergy for achieving peace and prosperity through cooperation and collaboration”, said the official release of the Indian Navy.
  • As a part of the harbour phase, a MILAN village has been set up at the Tarang Naval Institute. The village would provide a glimpse of Indian culture to the visitors, showcasing Indian handicrafts, cuisine and arts, especially from the state of Andhra Pradesh. The village will also provide a venue for social interaction and cultural exchange between the participating navies.

Ukraine agrees for talks, EU airspace ban on Russia

  • Russia's military invasion of Ukraine that triggered a global condemnation entered the fourth day on Sunday. Heavy battle between Russian troops and the Ukrainian army took place during the day as the former aimed to close in on Kharkiv - the second largest city of the east European nation.
  • However, by late evening (India time), regional governor OlehSinegubov took to social media to state Kharkiv was retaken by the Ukrainian soldiers. “Control over Kharkiv is completely ours!” the post read.
  • Visuals flooding social media showed smokes and fires coming out of buildings as Russian soldiers patrolled the city, and vehicles lay abandoned.
  • Ukrainians, who have been on a fleeing spree since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a military offensive in Ukraine, huddled at railway stations. The conflict has triggered a massive refugee influx in Poland, Hungary and Germany.
  • Ukraine, meanwhile, has agreed to hold talks with Russia at the Belarus border - near the Chernobyl exclusion zone, following a phone conversation between Ukraine's president VolodymyrZelensky and his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko. Earlier in the day, Zelensky had refused to consider Belarus as a negotiation medium, saying Ukraine does not want to hold peace talks in a location that had been the serving ground for the invasion.

  • Employers must pay for damages due to delay in payment of EPF contribution, rules SC
  • The Supreme Court, on Wednesday clarified that damages for delay in payment of the contribution of Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) of an employee will be paid by the employer.
  • “Employees Provident Fund and Miscellaneous Provisions Act is legislation for providing social security to employees working in any establishment engaging 20 or more persons,” a bench of Justice Ajay Rastogi and Justice Abhay S Oka said per news agency PTI.
  • The apex court added that under this law it is the responsibility of the employer to compulsorily deduct the provident fund (PF) and deposit the same in the employee's account in the EPF office.
  • “We are of the considered view that any default or delay in the payment of EPF contribution by the employer under the Act is a sine qua non for the imposition of levy of damages under Section 14B of the Act 1952 and mensrea or actusreus is not an essential element for imposing penalty/damages for breach of civil obligations/liabilities,” the bench added.
  • The SC’s verdict, delivered while hearing a plea filed against the decision of the Karnataka High Court, will affect more than 60 million EPFO subscribers.

4.4 million galaxies revealed by scientists in new study

  • The map revealed an astonishingly detailed radio image of more than 4.4 million objects and a very dynamic picture of our Universe, which has been made public for the first time.
  • It is not an unknown fact that our universe has millions of galaxies, of which, we live in one: the Milky Way galaxy. But is it possible to find out how many galaxies are there? In a piece of surprising news, a Durham University astronomer collaborating with a team of international scientists has mapped more than a quarter of the northern sky using the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR), a pan-European radio telescope.
  • The study titled, 'The LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS)' was published in 'Astronomy & Astrophysics'.
  • The map revealed an astonishingly detailed radio image of more than 4.4 million objects and a very dynamic picture of our Universe, which has been made public for the first time.
  • The vast majority of these objects is billions of light-years away and is either galaxies that harbour massive black holes or are rapidly growing new stars. Rarer objects that have been discovered include colliding groups of distant galaxies and flaring stars within the Milky Way.
  • To produce the map, scientists deployed state-of-the-art data processing algorithms on high-performance computers all over Europe to process 3,500 hours of observations that occupy 8 petabytes of disk space - the equivalent to roughly 20,000 laptops.

Ravi Dahiya makes golden return at Yasar Dogu wrestling meet

  • Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Ravi Dahiya made a rousing return to the mat with gold in the YasarDogu Ranking Series in Istanbul on Sunday. Dahiya defeated Uzbekistan’s GulomjonAbdullaev 11-10 in a thrilling 61kg final.
  • In a see-saw attacking contest, Dahiya was trailing 8-10 and drew level with his last move to come on top as Abdullaev lost his challenge. It was a revenge for the Indian who had lost to the Uzbek wrestler in Poland last year.
  • Dahiya, who won the Olympics silver in 57kg, was competing in a higher weight division but proved too strong for his opponents before he met his equal in Abdullaev, who beat UlukbekZholdoshbekov of Krygyzstan 7-0 in the semi-finals.
