National Science Day was celebrated on 28 February

  • National Science Day is celebrated every year on February 28. This day recalls the notable invention "Raman Effect" by India's greatest scientist C V Raman. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for this discovery. Since that day, February 28 is being commemorated as National Science Day to recall the great discovery of CV Raman.
  • The theme for National Science Day 2021 is "Future of STI: Impacts on Education, Skills, and Work". The National Science Day 2021 aims to motivate the students to gain hands-on experience in the field of science.
  • The celebration of National Science Day consists of public speeches, science movies, science exhibitions, events based on science themes, concepts, and many more activities.
  • The government of India felicitates scientists who have contributed immensely in the field of science to mark the anniversary of India's greatest discovery- 'Raman effect'.
  • Dr CV Raman was a renowned scientist who had bachelors' and masters' in Physics from the Presidency College in Madras. He took part in numerous science competitions along with the government job. Afterward, he received a scholarship from the Indian government.

Madagascar: India-donated digital cobalt therapy machine inaugurated

  • Underlining cooperation in the health sector, India has donated an advanced telecobalt machine for cancer treatment, developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, to the island nation of Madagascar.
  • The advanced digital cobalt therapy machine 'Bhabhatron-II' was inaugurated at the Joseph Ravoahangy Andrianavalona Hospital (HJRA) in Antananarivo, capital of Madagascar by President Andry Rajoelina this week.
  • Speaking on the occasion, Rajoelina said cancer is a disease that affects more and more people in our society and is one of the leading causes of mortality, according to a press release.
  • India’s Ambassador to Madagascar Abhay Kumar, addressing the audience at the inauguration, said cancer is a major health problem affecting a large number of people globally.
  • Kumar said that during the visit of President Ram Nath Kovind to Madagascar in March 2018, it was announced that the Bhabhatron machine would be donated to Madagascar, which is one of the few countries to have received the Bhabhatron-II radio therapy machine from India.

::ECONOMY::

65% less, lower-middle income countries slash education budget after COVID-19

  • Education budgets were cut by 65 per cent of low and lower-middle income countries after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic while only 33 per cent of high and upper-middle income countries did so, according to a report by the World Bank.
  • The report, compiled in collaboration with UNESCO's Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report, said the current levels of government spending in low and lower-middle income countries fall short of those required to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • "In order to understand the short-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on education budgets, information was collected for a sample of 29 countries across all regions. The sample represents about 54 per cent of the world's school and university aged population. The information collected was then verified with World Bank country teams," the report said.

::SCIENCE AND TECH::

ISRO launches 19 satellites including Amazon 1 from Brazil using PSLV-C51 rocket

  • India's Polar rocket on Sunday successfully launched Amazonia-1 satellite of Brazil from the spaceport, in the first mission of the year for space agency ISRO from Satish Dhawan Space Centre at 10:24 am.
  • The 637-kg Amazonia-1, which became the first Brazilian satellite to be launched from India, is an optical earth observation satellite of National Institute for Space Research (INPE). It is the first dedicated PSLV commercial mission by New Space India Limited (NSIL)-- commercial arm of Department of Space.
  • This is also the first time Brazil is launching its satellite on an Indian rocket. It is the first satellite that is completely designed, tested, integrated and operated by National Institute for Space Research (INPE) Brazil. 
  • Amazonia-1 carries with it a wide field camera with 850 km swath and 60m resolution. It has two solar panels to charge its Lithium Ion Batteries. The optical Earth observation satellite has a lifespan of more than four years.

Vinesh Phogat won gold medal in wrestling tournament in Kiev, Ukraine

  • India's star wrestler Vinesh Phogat defeated 2017 world champion V Kaladzinskay to win the gold medal at the Outstanding Ukrainian Wrestlers and Coaches Memorial tournament.
  • Up against the world number seven Belarusian, it was not an easy bout for the world number three Indian as the two grapplers kept testing each other with consistent attacks in the sea-saw battle in which Vinesh prevailed.
  • Vinesh opened up a 4-0 lead in the 53kg final with a throw which she initiated with a left-leg attack but Kaladzinskay made it 4-4 with her brilliant move.
  • Vinesh took the break leading 6-4, adding to her score with a takedown, 10 seconds before the break.
  • The Belarusian put pressure on the Indian with another four-point throw but with 25 seconds to go, Vinesh's move fetched her four more points for a 10-8 lead. She got into a position from where she pinned Kaladzinskay to ensure herself a gold.
