Rajnath Singh, South Korean counterpart discussed defence cooperation

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Minister of Defence of Republic of Korea SuhWook held bilateral talks and explored new domains in defence cooperation.
  • "The defence and security engagements between India and RoK have grown exponentially over the last few years. The latest talks explored new domains of bilateral defence cooperation and avenues to strengthen the long-standing bilateral defence partnership," read the official statement.
  • Both the Ministers exchanged views on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the defence and security engagements as well as best practices followed by the Armed Forces of both nations. Rajnath Singh lauded the stellar contribution of RoK in the pandemic mitigation efforts.
  • Chief of Defence Staff General BipinRawat, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal R K S Bhadauria, Chief of Army Staff General M MNaravane, Secretary (Defence Production) Raj Kumar and Secretary Department of Defence R&D and Chairman Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) G Satheesh Reddy formed part of the Indian delegation during the talks, the statement read.

PM Modi, Xi Jinping on Joe Biden’s 40 leaders’ guest list for climate summit

  • US President Joe Biden has invited 40 world leaders including Indian Prime Minister NarendraModi for a virtual leaders summit on climate scheduled for next month.
  • The leaders' summit on climate will underscore the urgency - and the economic benefits - of stronger climate action, according to a statement by the White House on Friday. The two-day summit will be held from April 22 to 23.
  • It will be a key milestone on the road to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) this November in Glasgow.
  • Biden has invited 40 leaders of the summit including, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison. From Southeast Asia, he has invited -- PM Modi, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Bhutan Prime Minister LotayTshering among others.
  • The themes of the Summit will include galvanising efforts by the world's major economies to reduce emissions during this critical decade to keep a limit to warming of 1.5 degree Celsius within reach and mobilising public and private sector finance to drive the net-zero transition and to help vulnerable countries cope with climate impacts.

::ECONOMY::

Government extends validity of driving license, vehicle documents till June 30

  • The government on Friday extended the validity of motor vehicle documents like driving licence (DL), registration certificate (RC) and permits till June 30, 2021, in view of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
  • In an advisory to states, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) said it is extending the validity of fitness, permit, driving licence, registration and other documents whose extension of validity could not be granted due to lockdown and which had expired since February 1, 2020, or would expire by March 31, 2021.
  • It had earlier issued advisories dated March 30, 2020, June 9, 2020, August 24, 2020, and December 27, 2020, in connection with extension of validity of documents related to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989.
  • It is advised that the validity of the documents that have expired since February 1,, the same may be treated to be valid till June 30, 2021, the ministry said in an advisory to states.

CSIR-CMERI transfers COVID related technologies of Oxygen Enrichment Unit, UVC LED Sterilizer Unit andSafe Disposal of Solid Waste

  • CSIR-Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute, Durgapur transferred its COVID related technologies namely  Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Disposal System  in modular form, Oxygen Enrichment Unit and Intelligent UVC LED Sterilizer Unit to    M/s.SaiEnviro Engineers Pvt. Ltd. (SEEPL), Tuticorin Tamil Nadu, M/s.Zen Medical Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Ranga Reddy, Telangana and M/s.Trinity Microsystems Pvt Ltd, New Delhi respectively on 24.03.2021.
  • Prof. (Dr.) Harish Hirani, Director, CSIR-CMERI on the occasion shared that there has been a substantial recurrence of the COVID-19 menace in the recent times. At the same time there is an urgent need to strengthen the Indian Economy through a multi-pronged strategy, which aims towards AtmaNirbharta or Self-Reliance. 
  • CSIR-CMERI is dedicated towards the goal of AtmaNirbharta through technology innovations & transfers, which reflects the latest technology advancements for societal intervention, to the MSMEs, small entrepreneurs and start-ups. In the last few days CSIR-CMERI has conducted a number of skill development programs on specialisations ranging from additive manufacturing to applied statistical design and has benefitted around 300 young minds. 
  • CSIR-CMERI ought to immediately reach the beneficiaries to ensure its comprehensive impact on the society. This can be achieved when MSMEs, Entrepreneurs and Start-Ups join hands with CSIR-CMERI. Another aspect of achieving AtmaNirbharta is through skilling the national human resource and keeping them attuned to the latest technological advancements for operations & maintenance (O&M). 
  • Boosting of indigenous technology and capacity building will address the root causes of import dependence and help in promotion of exports for the nation.

ISSF Shooting World Cup: India Wins Gold in 50m Rifle 3 Position Mixed Team Competition

  • The Indians beat Ukraine's SerhiyKulish and Anna Ilina 31-29 in the gold medal match, using their years of experience to good effect to emerge victorious. The Indian gold count went up to 11 with their top finish. 
  • AishwaryPratap Singh Tomar and SunidhiChauhan won the bronze medal after getting the better of USA's Timothy Sherry and Virginia Thrasher 31-15 at the DrKarni Singh Shooting Range. 
  • To start with, Rajput and Sawant were1-3 behind before leading 5-3.
