PLEA FOR REPOLL DISMISSED BY SC
- The Supreme Court refused to direct the Election Commission to hold
fresh polls in case the majority of the electorate exercises ‘None Of The
Above Option’ (NOTA) option recently introduced on its direction to allow
voters to reject all the candidates.
- A bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam said it is for the
legislature to amend the law as it is too early to pass such a direction.
- It observed that the NOTA has been introduced recently and it remains to
be seen how the people respond to it.
- The court refused to entertain a PIL filed by one Jaggan Nath, seeking
its direction to the Commission not to declare the results when the majority
of electorate go for NOTA option in the electronic voting machine (EVM).
The court had on September 27 given the path-breaking verdict, holding that
the voters have a right to reject all candidates contesting polls in a
constituency by pressing NOTA, a button for negative vote.
It had said this would compel political parties to field “sound” candidates
who are known for their integrity.
Landmark Iran nuclear deal
- US President Barack Obama has pulled off a historic deal with Iran on
curbing its nuclear program but he and other global leaders now have tough
work ahead turning an interim accord into a comprehensive agreement.
- In a sign of how difficult the coming talks will be, some differences
emerged between U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and his Iranian
counterpart in their public presentation of a key part of the deal - whether
or not Iran preserved the right to enrich uranium.
- The agreement, which halts Iran's most sensitive nuclear activity, its
higher-grade enrichment of uranium, was tailored as a package of
confidence-building steps towards reducing decades of tension and ultimately
creating a more stable, secure Middle East.
- The deal has hindered the construction of the Arak research reactor. It
will neutralize Iran's stockpile of uranium refined to a fissile
concentration of 20 percent, which is close to the level needed for weapons,
allow increased U.N. nuclear inspections, and stop uranium enrichment over a
fissile purity of 5 percent.
- In return the accord grants about $7 billion in potential relief from
sanctions. It will allow a potential access to $1.5 billion in trade in gold
and precious metals and the suspension of some sanctions on Iran's auto
sector and petrochemical exports, and also give Iran access to some $4.2
billion in sales from its reduced oil exports.
MS Dhoni becomes first wicketkeeper to captain in 150 ODIs
- MS Dhoni reached a special landmark in Vizag on Sunday, becoming the
first wicketkeeper in the history of one-day internationals (ODI) to captain
a side in 150 matches.
- Dhoni, who celebrated the landmark with his customary blitzkrieg in a
40-ball 51*, would have loved to celebrate his achievement with a win
against West Indies in the second ODI but the visitors held their nerves to
level the series at 1-1 with a nailbiting two-wicket victory.
- The current Indian skipper is also the only captain in the game's
history to win all three ICC events - Twenty20 World Cup, ODI World Cup and
Champions Trophy. Dhoni is now only 25 matches from breaking Mohammad
Azharuddin's record of leading India in 174 ODIs.
- Azhar also holds the distinction of being the most successful ODI
captain for India, winning 90 matches. He is followed by Dhoni, who has won
87 and lost 51 matches, and Ganguly, who led India to victory in 66 of the
147 ODIs he captained.
- Dhoni, who became India captain in 2007, and Azharuddin are the only two
captains to lead India in 150 ODIs. The all-time record for most matches as
ODI captain is in the name of Ricky Ponting, who led Australia in 230 ODIs.
