Delhi designates metro, malls, religious places 'super spreader' areas

  • In the wake of spike in Covid-19 cases in the national capital, the Delhi government on Tuesday declared metros, malls, movie theatres and religious places as "super spreader areas". The Delhi government also instructed the district magistrates to increase surveillance in the areas to check the spread.
  • Along with several other states, Delhi is witnessing a spike in daily Covid-19 issues. On Tuesday, it reported more than 1,100 fresh infections in the highest single-day jump in three months. Before this, Delhi reported 888 cases on Monday. On March 20, there were 813 cases and four deaths, while on March 21, 823 cases and one death were reported.
  • As per the state health ministry figures, Delhi's Covid-19 tally stands at 649,973. While the death toll has reached 10,967 after the addition of four deaths in the last 24 hours.
  • Earlier, Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) restricted public celebration for upcoming festivals such as Holi and Navratri. "All District Magistrates concerned authorities should ensure strict adherence to the order," it said in the statement.

Taiwan to help allies buy vaccines, but not from China

  • Taiwan will help its handful of remaining diplomatic allies buy Covid-19 vaccines but on the condition that Taiwanese money is not used to obtain Chinese vaccines, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu.
  • Chinese-claimed Taiwan has formal ties with only 15 countries, mostly poor and developing states in Latin America, the Caribbean and the Pacific, and Beijing has stepped up efforts to coax them away from Taipei.
  • Taiwan said last week it was helping its sole diplomatically in South America, Paraguay, buy Covid-19 vaccines, after protests in the country over the Paraguayan government's handling of the health crisis.
  • Wu told parliament they will help their allies buy the vaccines they need.
  • "But one of the conditions is that Chinese vaccines cannot be bought. Or, if you buy Chinese vaccines, then you cannot use our Taiwanese money," he added.
  • China has already begun offering its vaccines to mostly developing countries.

Businesses face losses in tax credits on suppliers’ defaults

  • Industry watchers said the losses could be as much as 7% of the working capital of large companies having sales of over ₹500 crore. It could be worse for mid and small companies.
  • With the Centre revving up the tax compliance drive using the technology infrastructure of goods and services tax (GST), businesses are facing delays or losses in tax credits owing to supplier defaults.
  • Industry watchers said the losses could be as much as 7% of the working capital of large companies having sales of over ₹500 crore. It could be worse for mid and small companies.
  • The government seems to be putting the onus on businesses to ensure tax compliance by their material and service suppliers.
  • Considering that GST is levied on value additions at every stage of the supply chain, non-compliance at any stage by an entity impacts flow of input tax credit across the supply chain. Businesses are denied credit when their suppliers default in remitting the collected indirect tax amount to the exchequer.

‘Well before 2030’: Musk on SpaceX landing Starship rockets on Mars

  • SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk said on Tuesday his company will land Starships on the Red Planet before 2030. Musk’s comment was a reply to a tweet on his timeline, which included an article on how Europe feared the progress of Space X. “SpaceX will be landing Starships on Mars well before 2030. The really hard threshold is making Mars Base Alpha self-sustaining,” Musk tweeted.
  • In December last year, Musk said his company is “highly confident” that it will land humans on Mars by 2026, terming it as an achievable goal “about six years from now.”
  • “If we get lucky, maybe four years. We want to send an uncrewed vehicle there in two years,” Musk said while speaking on an award show webcast from Berlin, Germany.
  • Musk’s ambitious goal of landing humans on Mars before 2030 is in tandem with one of the first plans that he outlined for the landing on the Red Planet in 2016. “If things go super well, it might be kind of in the 10-year timeframe,” Musk had then said.

PT Usha, Randhawa named selection committee heads for juniors and seniors

  • The 56-year-old Usha won multiple medals in the Asian Games in 100m, 200m, 400m and 4x400m besides finishing fourth in 400m hurdles in 1984 Olympics.
  • Sprint legend PT Usha has been given charge of the junior selection committee while hurdling great Gurbachan Singh Randhawa will head the senior panel in the latest appointments announced by the Athletics Federation of India.
  • The 56-year-old Usha won multiple medals in the Asian Games in 100m, 200m, 400m and 4x400m besides finishing fourth in 400m hurdles in 1984 Olympics.
  • Other members of the junior committee are Soma Biswas, AnandMenzes, Satbir Singh, SandeepSarkaria, Sunita Rani, Rama Chandran, Joseph Abraham, HarwantKaur, M D Valsama and Kamal Ali Khan.
