Bihar Congress unit proposes district-level dharna on farmers’ issues

  • The Congress plans to hold four to five regional level farmers’ conclave next month before holding a mega rally at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan to highlight the shortcomings of the new farm laws.
  • After a statewide padyatra-cum-mass contact programme, the Bihar unit of the Congress is gearing up to muster popular support for the party on the issue of farmers’ protest over the new farm’s laws by organising a district-level dharna and demonstration across the state on March 25.
  • Grappling with the challenge to bring the party back into relevance, All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge for Bihar and former Union minister BhaktaCharan Das visited 36 out of 38 districts of the state to utilise the farmers’ unrest to resurrect the party at grassroots level.
  • Das led the Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee (BPCC) drive christened as ‘KisanSatyagrahAndolan’ which kicked off on January 26 and was aimed at sensitising the people in general and farmers in particular about devastating fallout of the controversial farms laws on rural economy amply suggests that party’s desperation to retrieve its past glory, said chairman of BPCC media department Rajesh Rathore.

Flooding stops Australian coal rail deliveries to Newcastle port

  • "High rainfall, potential for more severe flooding beyond the current impacts to the network, strong winds, fallen trees and debris, power failures and fallen power lines and power poles are all concerns which led to operations being halted," said a spokesman at ARTC, which runs the rail lines.
  • Australia's Hunter Valley coal rail lines have been shut due to flooding in the state of New South Wales, the Australian Rail Track Corp said on Monday, halting deliveries into the port of Newcastle, the world's biggest coal export port.
  • "High rainfall, potential for more severe flooding beyond the current impacts to the network, strong winds, fallen trees and debris, power failures and fallen power lines and power poles are all concerns which led to operations being halted," said a spokesman at ARTC, which runs the rail lines.
  • It said tracks would be reopened when conditions are safe and water levels recede.
  • The Hunter Valley network serves mines run by BHP Group Ltd, Glencore PLC, New Hope Corp Ltd, Whitehaven Coal, and Yancoal Australia Ltd, among others.

Weak inflation adds to risk of further drop in Singapore dollar

  • Elevated US Treasury yields have already helped push the greenback through its 100-day moving average versus the city-state’s currency. While momentum stalled at 1.3531, just short of the 200-day moving average, it may just be a matter of time before the level is breached.
  • The Singapore dollar is vulnerable to retesting a four-month low, with signs that benign inflation and a gradual economic recovery will keep the central bank on hold at its April monetary policy review.
  • Elevated US Treasury yields have already helped push the greenback through its 100-day moving average versus the city-state’s currency. While momentum stalled at 1.3531, just short of the 200-day moving average, it may just be a matter of time before the level is breached.
  • Inflation data due this week is forecast to show only the slimmest of gains, which would give little cause for the Monetary Authority of Singapore to tap the brakes on currency declines by adjusting the exchange-rate band it uses to ensure price stability. Unlike most other central banks, the MAS uses the currency as its main monetary tool, rather than interest rates.
