UAE Air Force to help 3 Rafale fighters reach India

  • India and the UAE are expected to take bilateral ties to the next level with the two countries, along with France, discussing conducting trilateral military exercises
  • The state of the relationship will be on display later this month when the United Arab Emirates Air Force will handle the mid-air refuelling of India’s three Rafale fighter jets flying into the Indian Air Force station at Ambala from France, people familiar with the matter said.
  • The UAE air force’s Airbus multi-role transport tanker will twice refuel the three Indian fighter jets on their non-stop eight-hour flight from Bordeaux-Merignac base in France to join the Golden Arrows Squadron in Ambala.
  • When five Rafale fighters flew non-stop to India from France on July 29, 2020, the aircraft was refuelled four times by a French MRTT.
  • The UAE Air Force will also provide mid-air refuelling to the next batch of seven Rafale fighters coming to India in the second half of April. 
  • As of now, four French Air Force’s Rafale fighters along with an Airbus MRTT are exercising with the Indian Air Force in the skies over Pokhran. The French fighters will later participate in annual exercises with the Australian Air Force.

China congratulates Biden, welcomes US return to WHO, Paris Accord

  • Biden had used the word “unity” several times in his inauguration speech, and that it was “precisely what is needed currently in US-China relations.
  • Beijing said it welcomed news that the US would rejoin the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Paris climate accord, as Biden made his first efforts to pivot Washington back to a central role in global leadership.
  • “With cooperation from both sides, the better angels in China-US relations will beat the evil forces,” foreign ministry spokesperson HuaChunying told a ministry briefing on 21-01-2021.
  • Hua said Biden had used the word “unity” several times in his inauguration speech, and that it was “precisely what is needed currently in US-China relations”.
  • “The Chinese government is firmly resolved to defend China’s national sovereignty, security and development interests. China has decided to sanction 28 persons who have seriously violated China’s sovereignty and who have been mainly responsible for such U.S. moves on China-related issues,” the statement added.

PM Modi releases 2,691 crore for over 6 lakh PMAY-G beneficiaries in UP

  • Prime Minister NarendraModi today released financial assistance of 2,691 crore to 6.1 lakh beneficiaries in Uttar Pradesh under the PradhanMantriAwasYojana - Gramin (PMAY-G). Modi released the assistance via video conference. Union Rural Development Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath were present on the occasion.
  • "We've seen the situation during the regime of previous governments. I am talking about Uttar Pradesh especially, the poor didn't believe that the govt can help them in constructing a house. The previous Awaas schemes, the kind of houses built under them was not hidden from anyone," PM Modi said.
  • Under PMAY-G, each beneficiary is given a 100 per cent grant of 1.20 lakh in plain areas and 1.30 lakh in hilly states, North Eastern States, difficult areas, Jammu, and Kashmir, and Ladakh, among others.
  • The beneficiaries of PMAY-G are also provided support of unskilled labour wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) and assistance of 12,000 for construction of toilets through the Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin (SBM-G), MGNREGS or any other dedicated source of funding.

UEFA considering switch to single host for this summer's Euros: Rummenigge

  • The 24-nation tournament, a major revenue generator for European football's governing body and the national federations, was postponed by 12 months due to the pandemic.
  • Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said UEFA President AleksanderCeferin is weighing up whether to stage the European Championship in one country this summer rather than across the continent as planned due to COVID-19 concerns.
  • "We must not forget that the idea of this special hosting of the tournament came about when the coronavirus didn't exist ... it was an initiative of the EU Commission that wanted to have football shown all over Europe," he told German newspaper MuenchnerMerkur/TZ.
