Navjot Singh Sidhu appointed Congress Punjab unit chief amid rift with CM
The Congress appointed Navjot Singh Sidhu as the president of its Punjab unit after days of intense tussle in the state where the chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh resisted the elevation.
The party also announced the appointment of four working presidents, Sangat Singh Gilzian, Sukhwinder Singh Danny, PawanGoel and Kuljit Singh Nagra, which paves the way for a significant revamp of the organisational set-up disbanded by the Congress president in January 2020. The state is scheduled to go to the polls early next year.
“Congress president has appointed Navjot Singh Sidhu as the president of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect,” according to a statement by the All India Congress Committee. “The party appreciates the contributions of outgoing PCC president Sunil Jakhar,” it added.
The announcement came at the end of a day full of hectic political activity that saw the factions led by Singh and Sidhu holding meetings with supporters to consolidate their positions. The incumbent Punjab Congress president Sunil Jakhar called a meeting of party legislators and district unit chiefs on Monday to draw up a resolution for a solution but the meeting was called off following the formal announcement.
Japan sets internet speed record by transferring 319 Tb/s over 3,001 km
The Japanese research institute noted that the result from the latest internet speed test will help the realisation of new communication systems that can support the new “bandwidth hungry services.”
Researchers in Japan have demonstrated an internet speed of 319 terabits per second, setting a world record. A team of researchers at Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) used advanced fiber optic technology with a 4-core optical fibre of standard outer diameter of 0.125 mm to perform the speed test, breaking the previous record of 178 Tb/s set by engineers in Japan and Britain a year ago.
To achieve the record speed, the researchers constructed a recirculating transmission loop experimental set-up by combining two kinds of rare-earth-doped fiber amplifiers. The combination of erbium and thulium doped-fiber amplifiers and distributed Raman amplification enabled a long-distance transmission over 3,001 km.
“The 4-core MCF with standard cladding diameter is attractive for early adoption of SDM fibers in high-throughput, long-distance links, since it is compatible with conventional cable infrastructure and expected to have mechanical reliability comparable to single-mode fibers,” the Japanese research institute said in a paper published earlier this month.
SBI urges customers to link PAN-Aadhaar for seamless banking services
The State Bank of India (SBI) has urged its customers to mandatorily link their permanent account number (PAN) with Aadhaar cards to avoid any inconvenience and to continue enjoying seamless banking services.
SBI, the country's largest bank, further warned its account holders that if the two documents are not linked, the PAN will be rendered inoperative/inactive and cannot be quoted for conducting specified transactions.
Last month, the Union government extended the deadline to link PAN with Aadhaar to September 30 in view of the coronavirus pandemic. The deadline was earlier set as March 31 but was later revised to June 30.

A systems engineer at the commercial spaceflight company, SanjalGavande is a mechanical engineering graduate from the University of Mumbai. She went to the US in 2011 to pursue her master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Michigan Technological University. “I am really happy that my childhood dream is about to come true. I am proud to be a part of Team Blue Origin," Gavande told The Times of India.
SanjalGavande, the daughter of a municipal corporation employee and a retired MTNL official, opted for aerospace as a subject in her master's and cleared it with a first-class.
UK Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton wins Formula One British Grand Prix at Silverstone
Lewis Hamilton celebrated a record eighth British Grand Prix victory on Sunday after fighting back from a 10-second penalty for a first-lap collision that halted the race and sent title rival Max Verstappen to hospital.
The Mercedes driver, now only eight points behind Red Bull's Verstappen after 10 races, passed Ferrari's Charles Leclerc with two laps to go as a capacity 140,000 crowd rose to cheer on their home hero.
Hamilton's team mate ValtteriBottas finished third after being told to let Hamilton through to chase Leclerc, who had led from the re-start and was voted driver of the day.
