Rajya Sabha to take up Lokpal bill for consideration

The much-delayed Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill, 2011 has been taken up for consideration in Rajya Sabha with most parties agreeing to pass the anti-corruption legislation, except the Samajwadi Party (SP) which staged a walkout boycotting the House proceedings.

The Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill, 2011, which could not be passed in the House in December 2011, was brought back after being referred to the Parliamentary Select Committee that recommended a number of amendments to make it widely acceptable among the political parties.
Pressure on A K Ganguly to quit as WB Human Rights Commission chairman
- The home ministry is expected to soon advise President Pranab Mukherjee on the action that can be taken against retired Supreme Court judge A K Ganguly amid fresh pressure on him to quit as West Bengal Human Rights Commission chairman after the affidavit of a woman lawyer who has accused Ganguly of sexual harassment became public.
At 111, golfer Lahiri now highest-ranked Indian

Bangalore golfer Anirban Lahiri became the highest-ranked Indian golfer in the world, at 111, following his tied-fourth finish at the $1 million Thailand Golf Championships. His Bangkok heroics meant the Vijay Divecha-coached golfer rose 21 places in the world and a notch higher to be fifth in the Asian Tour Order of Merit.

Lahiri is now ahead of the likes of 2006 Doha Asian Games silver medallist Gaganjeet Bhullar, Asian Tour honorary member Jeev Milkha Singh, three-time Indian Open champion Jyoti Randhawa and two-time European Challenge Tour winner Shiv Kapur.

Consistency has paid for Lahiri, who recorded six top-10 finishes in 2013 besides his SAIL-SBI Open triumph at the Delhi Golf Club.
Delhi Waveriders
- Actor-turned-producer John Abraham has been signed by Hockey India League (HIL) franchise Delhi Waveriders as its co-owner recently.
- The franchise also appointed former national hockey coach Cedric D'Souza as their new coach for the second edition of the league which starts next month.
- The Hockey India League is scheduled from January 25 to February 15, with six teams competing against each other.
