Pepper spray incident

  • Speaker Meira Kumar has referred the pepper spray incident in the Lok Sabha to the Committee of Privileges, which has powers to recommend punitive measures.

  • The use of pepper spray by expelled Congress MP L. Rajagopal even as the Telangana Bill was being introduced on February 13, plunged the House into pandemonium and led to the hospitalisation of three MPs .

  • The matter has been referred to the committee “under Rule 227 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Lok Sabha.

  • Its function is to examine every question involving breach of privilege or contempt of the House or of the members of any Committee thereof referred to it by the House or by the Speaker.

  • “United Nations International Conference on Population and Development Beyond 2014.”

  • According to an U.N. report, since the adoption of the Cairo Programme of Action at the United Nations International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in 1994, the status of women has improved worldwide . But , it also says that growing inequalities is likely to undo the significant gains made in health and longevity.

  • Maternal mortality has come down by half; skilled birth attendance has increased by 15 per cent since 1990; more women have access to education, work and political participation; and fewer adolescent girls are having babies, says the report “United Nations International Conference on Population and Development Beyond 2014.”

  • The report is the first truly global review of progress, gaps, challenges and emerging issues in relation to the landmark Cairo ICPD. It gathers data from 176 countries, alongside inputs from civil society and comprehensive academic research.

Solar Impulse

  • Indians are going to witness a spectacle in the skies as world's first day and night flying solar-powered wide bodied aircraft will fly into India as part of its round the globe journey.

  • Termed as ‘Signature in the Skies,’ the flying laboratory will provide Indian clean energy and aviation enthusiasts a lifetime experience. Switzerland based Solar Impulse, world’s first day and night-abled solar-powered aircraft is all set to visit India in April 2015.

  • It is for the first time in history that an airplane has succeeded in flying night and day without fuel, powered by only solar energy. It is launched by Bertrand Piccard and Mr. Borschberg.

Punjab Warriors beat Uttar Pradesh Wizards

  • Jaypee Punjab Warriors defeated Uttar Pradesh Wizards 2-1 to take the second spot on the points table at the International Hockey Stadium.
  • The last time these two teams met, they played out a 2-2 draw.

Kolkata ATP Challenger

  • Unseeded Ilija Bozoljac of Serbia thrashed third-seeded Evgeny Donskoy of Russia 6-1, 6-1 to win the State Bank of India $50,000 ATP Challenger at the BTA Complex .
  • Having made the final without dropping a set, the Serb overwhelmed Donskoy with a fine blend of powerful serving and penetrative groundstrokes.
  • Finally Ilija Bozoljac (Srb) bt Evgeny Donskoy (Rus) 6-1, 6-1.
