India hosted the "BRICS Symposium on the Misuse of Internet by Terrorists"

  • The immense challenges posed by the misuse of the Internet by terrorists can be effectively tackled by international cooperation and sharing of good practices, delegates at a BRICS seminar hosted by India observed.
  • The National Investigation Agency (NIA) organised the two-day online event of the BRICS nations that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa on April 13-14.
  • The seminar on the topic of ‘Misuse of Internet for Terrorist Purposes and Role of Digital Forensics in Terrorist Investigations’ was inaugurated by Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, the NIA said in a statement.

Haiti Prime Minister Joseph Jouthe Resigns

  • Haitian Prime Minister Joseph Jouthe on April 14 has submitted his resignation to President JovenelMoise. Without explaining the reason, he announced his decision on Twitter. His resignation follows a situation of unrest in the country, There has been an increase in killing and kidnapping cases over the past few days. 
  • Joseph Jouthe had served as prime minister since March 2020. He had previously also tried to resign but President Moise had refused to accept it. But, this time he accepted his resignation and even nominated Claude Joseph as the new prime minister. Jouthe on Twitter said that he had submitted his resignation to the President. He had thanked his colleagues in the government for their support.
  • The resignation of Joseph Jouthe was accepted by the President who said that the resignation would help in addressing the issue of insecurity problem in the country. In the tweet, he said that "The resignation of the Government, which I accepted, will make it possible to address the glaring problem of insecurity and continue discussions to achieve the consensus necessary for the political and institutional stability of our country."

India ranked 49 out of 120 countries in the Facebook 'Inclusive Internet Index' compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)

  • Despite cheapest data plans and nearly 700 million internet users, India is at a dismal 49th spot globally when it comes to internet inclusion and gender equality in accessing the world wide web, a Facebook-Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) study has revealed.
  • India is tied with Thailand in 49th place this year on the scores of internet availability (77th position globally), affordability (20th spot), relevance (49th position) and readiness (29th) categories.
  • "India's glaring underperformance in the availability pillar is, in large part, the reason for its placement, and this weak performance is owed to low internet usage and quality and widening gender gap in mobile phone and internet access in the country," the Facebook said in the 'Inclusive Internet Index' report.

:: SCIENCE AND TECH::

ISRO and French space agency CNES to work together for India's Gaganyaan program

  • Space agencies of India and France on Thursday signed an agreement for cooperation for the country's first human space mission Gaganyaan, the French space agency CNES said.
  • The agreement was announced during French Foreign Affairs minister Jean-Yves Le Drian visit to the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) headquarters.
  • ISRO has asked CNES to help prepare for Gaganyaan missions and to serve as its single European contact in this domain.
  • The agreement provides for the CNES to support implementation of a scientific experiment plan on validation missions, exchange information on food packaging and the nutrition programme, and above all the use by Indian astronauts of French equipment, consumables and medical instruments.
  • French equipment developed by CNES, tested and still operating aboard the International Space Station (ISS) will thus be made available to Indian crews.

England all-rounder Ben Stokes named 'Cricketer of the Year'

  • England all-rounder Ben Stokes has been named Wisden's leading cricketer in the world for the second year in a row.
  • Stokes, 29, is the first Englishman to win the award twice since its inception in 2004.
  • He scored more Test runs than any other batsman in 2020, with 641 in seven matches, while also taking 19 wickets.
  • Kent all-rounder Darren Stevens has become the oldest person since 1933 to be named as one of Wisden's five Cricketers of the Year.
