President’s Rule in Delhi

The Union Cabinet has approved the imposition of President’s Rule in Delhi.

It also accepted the recommendation of Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung for keeping the Assembly under suspended animation.

The President’s Rule will come into effect with the promulgation of a notification.

In his report to the Centre, Mr. Jung did not favour dissolution of the 70-member Delhi Assembly as recommended by the Council of Ministers headed by Mr. Kejriwal who decided to quit after being defeated in the Assembly over introduction of the Jan Lokpal Bill.

The LG’s move keeps the option open for any political party or a combination of parties to try and form a government in future.
Launch of AAP campaign in Haryana
- Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal will launch the party’s campaign for the Lok Sabha elections with a rally at Rohtak in Haryana on February 23.
- The AAP, preparing to field candidates for 323 Lok Sabha seats in 24 States, intends to challenge big names in every party including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi of the Congress and the BJP’s Narendra Modi.
- The second rally will be held in Uttar Pradesh on March 2.
- The party’s election preparations in Haryana, Delhi, Maharashtra and Punjab were ahead of its work in other States.
World’s longest underwater tunnel
- China plans to build the world’s longest underwater tunnel beneath the Bohai Sea by 2026, connecting the port cities of Dalian in Liaoning province and Yantai in Shandong province.
- The blueprint of the ambitious project is expected to be submitted to the State Council of the People’s Republic of China in April.
- The 123-km underwater tunnel will cost around 220 billion yuan ($36 billion).
- The length of the tunnel will be more than the combined length of the world’s two longest underwater tunnels – Japan’s Seikan Tunnel and the Channel Tunnel between Britain and France.
PGTI Eagleburg Open

Defending champion Anirban Lahiri gave a spirited charge on the final round with a card of four under 68 but Sri Lankan golfer Mithun Perera came up with a resolute one-under 71 to win the PGTI Eagleburg Open, his second title in two weeks.

Perera signed off with a tournament total of 22-under 266 to register a three-shot win despite Lahiri’s brilliant show.

Local favourite Lahiri secured runner-up position after ending up with a total of 19-under 269.
Basketball Hall of Fame
- Former NBA Commissioner David Stern has been elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, just two weeks after retiring from a successful 30-year reign.
- The Hall of Fame Committee has acknowledged Stern’s contributions to the NBA during his three decades as chief.
