Relieve Tamil Nadu governor from chancellor’s role, says Vaiko

  • Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) chief Vaiko, an ally of the ruling DMK here, on Sunday demanded that Tamil Nadu follow Maharashtra in relieving Governor R N Ravi from the responsibilities of chancellor of universities for indulging in “political rhetoric going beyond his authority”.
  • Taking strong exception to the Governor Ravi’s view that India is not a contractual union like the US but was organically forged and sustained for thousands of years due to shared cultural spiritualities, expressed during the inaugural of the South Zone Vice-Chancellors’ Meet held under the aegis of Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi at Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, on March 11, Vaiko claimed that the Governor exceeded official capacity and indulged in political rhetoric.
  • “This is condemnable. The Governor had reflected the RSS and SanghParivar view and is talking about what the Delhi bosses are saying. He must explain where India was before 1947,” Vaiko said in a statement here.
  • Inaugurating the Meet, the Governor had said “those who talk about federalism and Indian Union should remember that India was not born in 1947 nor it is a contractual union like United States of America.” He said the Union of India was organically forged and sustained for thousands of years by the shared cultural spiritualties of people who lived as one from one end to the other of Bharat irrespective of numerous kings and kingdoms.
  • Quoting a poem of MahakaviBharathiar in praise of Bharat Mata that “Bharat Mata speaks in 18 languages but her thinking is one,” he said India is not a contractual Union of disparate people.
  • Vaiko pointed out that prior to Independence, the country comprised of only 565 princely states until 200 years ago, before the British arrived. “Before that, even during the Mughal rule, Tamil Nadu was never under the rule of the North Indian kings,” Vaiko claimed and said that even during the British rule up to 1947, the present India did not exist.

  • Ukrainian President VolodymyrZelensky warned the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) early Monday that its member states will soon be attacked by Russian forces, a day after a Ukrainian military base close to the Polish border was hit by an airstrike. In a video address, Zelensky urged NATO to impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine. “I reiterate that if you do not close our sky, it is only a matter of time before Russian missiles fall on your territory, on NATO territory, on the homes of NATO citizens,” he said.
  • Zelensky also added in the video message that he had warned NATO leaders last year that "without preventive sanctions, Russia would start a war and would use the Nord Stream 2 pipeline as a weapon". The Russian airstrike on the Ukrainian military base close to the Polish border killed 35 people and injured 134, according to reports.'
  • Regional governor MaksymKozytskyy said that Russian planes fired around 30 rockets at the facility, adding that some were intercepted before they hit. "Russia has attacked the International Center for Peacekeeping and Security near Lviv. Foreign instructors work here. Information about the victims is being clarified," Ukraine's defence minister OleksiiReznikov said.
  • The base served as a crucial hub for cooperation between Ukraine and the NATO countries supporting its defence. Previously, it has hosted NATO drills.
  • The strike came as Moscow warned on Saturday that convoys of Western military supplies for Ukraine would be considered legitimate targets.
  • The Russian defence ministry, meanwhile, said on Sunday that a missile strike killed “foreign mercenaries” and destroyed a significant number of foreign weapons.

Chernobyl Nuclear Plant restored: Ukraine tells IAEA

  • Ukraine says it has restored Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) four days after they were completely lost at the Russian-controlled site, Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in a statement.
  • The Director-General received the news from the head of Ukraine's nuclear power company Energoatom, Petro Kotin, who told him that the specialists had fixed one of two damaged lines and would now be able to deliver all required off-site power to the NPP, where various radioactive waste management facilities are located following the 1986 accident.
  • Ukraine's regulator separately informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that the power supply line was restored at 18:38 CET by the repair personnel of Ukrenergo, the country's transmission system operator. The Chornobyl NPP continues to work on backup diesel generators and will be reconnected to the Ukrainian electricity grid in the morning, the statement said.
  • Earlier, the agency also informed that Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia NPP which is also under the control of Russia is not in a position to deliver the necessary spare parts, equipment, and specialized personnel to carry out planned repairs.
  • While Ukraine is reporting all the problems related to Chornobyl NPP, indicating NPP is in danger, Russia on other hand, denied all Ukraine's claims that the Chernobyl NPP is in danger after being captured by Russian forces.
  • On March 3, Ukraine informed the IAEA that Russian forces had taken the control of the site of the country's Zaporizhzhia NPP.
