PM asks security forces in J&K to exercise ‘restraint’

  • In a detailed presentation, Mr. Modi was informed by Home Ministry officials that Wani had 12 terror-related cases registered against him, and he was working towards “disintegration of the country.”

  • Mr. Modi chaired the meeting within hours of his return from the four-nation Africa tour.

  • The Prime Minister also expressed satisfaction over the progress of the Amarnath Yatra, and offered all help needed by the State government, Mr. Singh said.

  • Mr Modi was informed that over 100 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were injured in stone-pelting by mobs.

  • Mr. Modi was also told about the circumstances leading to the death of the policeman who was pushed with his vehicle into a river stream by a mob.

  • Meanwhile, in the wake of the ongoing tension in the Valley, Home Minister Rajnath Singh postponed his official trip to the U.S. till September this year.

Najma Heptullah quits, Naqvi gets a promotion

  • The reshuffle in the Union Cabinet saw a postscript with Minister for Minority Affairs Najma Heptullah tendering her resignation, and her deputy, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi being given independent charge of that Ministry. G.M. Siddheshwara, Davangere MP and Minister of State for Heavy Industries, also quit.

  • Both resignations have been accepted by President Pranab Mukherjee. Minister of State for Urban Development Babul Supriyo has been assigned Mr. Siddheshwara’s portfolio, after being divested of his former charge.

  • Ms. Heptullah, who had been the deputy chairperson of the Rajya Sabha for many years, was abroad during the Cabinet reshuffle last week, and quit when she returned.

  • A top government source said she had fallen within the “75 age rule” or Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s preference for a Cabinet below that age.

Tribunal rejects Beijing’s claims on South China Sea

  • A tribunal ruled that China has no legal basis for its vast claims in the South China Sea and had aggravated the seething regional dispute with its extensive construction of artificial islands that destroyed coral reefs and infringed on the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.

  • China immediately rejected the arbitration findings. While the ruling cannot reverse China’s actions, it still constitutes a rebuke, carrying with it the force of the international community’s opinion.

  • China and the Philippines are among the six governments that have overlapping territorial claims in the South China Sea, waters through which an estimated $5 trillion in global trade passes through each year.

  • The Philippines, under a U.N. treaty governing the seas, asked in 2013 for arbitration.

  • The five-member panel from the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, Netherlands, unanimously concluded that China had violated its obligations to refrain from

  • aggravating the dispute while the settlement process was under way.

Promote labour-intensive industries: NITI Aayog

  • NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Arvind Panagariya stressed upon the need to promote labour-intensive industries in the country in a bid to create jobs.

  • In a meeting with central trade unions and industry bodies, Mr. Panagariya gave a presentation on employment generation drawing a comparison with other countries such as China,

  • Korea and Japan, said Virjesh Upadhyay, general secretary, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, who attended the meeting.

  • The meeting comes ahead of the labour ministry’s meet on July 18 with central trade unions to revive talks on their 12-point charter of demands.

World Cup kabaddi in Punjab

  • The sixth World Cup kabaddi championship will be held from November 3 to 17 across 14 venues in Punjab.

  • The winner in the men’s category will get Rs. 2 crore while the runner-up will receive Rs. one crore.

  • In the women’s category, the champion team will receive Rs. one crore and the second-placed team, Rs. 51 lakh.
