Aryabhatta Award to G Satheesh Reddy

  • Dr G Satheesh Reddy is a pioneer in the area of R&D of advanced avionics, navigation and missile technologies
  • Dr Reddy is an institution builder and has set up mechanisms to establish robust defence development and production ecosystem       
  • Secretary DDR&D and Chairman DRDO Dr G Satheesh Reddy has been conferred the prestigious Aryabhata Award by Astronautical Society of India (ASI) for his outstanding life-time contribution to the promotion of astronautics in India. 
  • The award function was held on  October 09, 2021 at UR Rao Satellite Centre Bangalore with participants joining virtually from across the ISRO, DRDO and other academic institutions.
  • Dr G Satheesh Reddy is a pioneer in the area of R&D of advanced avionics, navigation and missile technologies. He has contributed immensely to strategic and tactical missile systems and helped the country become self-reliant in critical defence technologies.
  • He is an institution builder and has set up mechanisms to establish robust defence development and production ecosystem. Due to his persistent effort, defence research in academic institutes is accelerating towards higher technology readiness level.
  • The ASI is engaged in the dissemination of technical and other information related to astronautics by conducting technical meetings, bringing out technical publications and organising exhibitions.

'Father of Pakistan's atomic bomb' Dr Abdul Qadir Khan passes away

  • Abdul Qadeer Khan, the disgraced atomic scientist known as the ‘father of Pakistan’s nuclear bomb’ under the clandestine enrichment programme and infamous for his controversial role in nuclear proliferation, died here on Sunday after a brief illness. He was 85.
  • Khan, who was born in 1936 in Bhopal and migrated to Pakistan along with his family after the Partition in 1947, breathed his last at about 7 am (local time) at the Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) Hospital — the medical facility named after him.
  • According to the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan, Khan had been admitted to the KRL Hospital on August 26 after he tested positive for Covid-19. Later, he was shifted to a military hospital in Rawalpindi, but was discharged after recovering from the virus.
  • Khan was brought to the KRL Hospital early in the morning after he faced difficulty in breathing, Geo News reported.
  • Doctors said Khan’s health deteriorated after bleeding in his lungs. He could not survive after his lungs collapsed.
  • Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed said all efforts were made to save his life. “The prime minister has directed to bury DrQadeer with full (state) honours,” Rashid said.

::ECONOMY::

Maharashtra government launched 'Mission KavachKundal'

  • The Maharashtra government has declared to launch “Mission KavachKundal”, a seven-day special campaign to boost its Covid-19 vaccination drive, starting from October 8. It has set a target of vaccinating minimum 1.5 million people a day. It is also looking to prioritise covering the first doses of all citizens at the earliest. This will help in reducing the severity of the Covid-19 infections even if the potential third wave hits the state.
  • He also declared to provide monetary assistance of ₹50,000 each to the kin of those who died due to Covid-19 infection during the pandemic. The state government has made a provision of ₹700 crore for the same. The decision was taken, following the directives of the central government.
  • “The state government has decided to undertake a special drive to boost vaccination in Maharashtra. Between October 8 [Friday] and October 14, we will be holding ‘Mission KavachKundal’ under which the state has set a target of administering 1.5 million doses a day at least. The drive will help us cover the citizens to get vaccinated in less time,” Tope told reporters.
  • The most beneficiaries covered in a day in the state is 1.4 million. As many as 1,439,809 doses were vaccinated on September 8.
  • According to the statistics provided by the state health department, the targeted population for vaccination in Maharashtra is 91.5 million. Of them, 60 million have been covered with first dose and 31.5 million is yet to be vaccinated, while those fully vaccinated are 25 million.
  • “If we could give priority for first doses and cover the remaining 31.5 million than the entire population will covered with first dose and the threat of severity after infecting with the virus will be reduced… I have directed the officials to work on mission mode and cover 2 million to 2.5 million in a day in the coming days,” he said.
  • He informed that they have enough stock of doses at present and expecting more as union health minister MansukhMandaviya has promised him there won’t be any shortage in supply. “We have 7.5 million doses, as of now, and another stock of 2.5 million doses is expected to reach. The union health minister in a telephonic conversation has promised to provide enough stock as the Centre has also set a target to cover 10 million doses by October 15,” health minister said.

PM Modi to launch 'PM Gati Shakti' masterplan

  • Prime Minister NarendraModi will unveil on October 13 PM GatiShakti - National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity to economic zones, a digital platform which will bring 16 ministries including rail and roadways together for integrated planning and coordinated implementation of infrastructure connectivity projects, a top government official said on Monday.
  • The official said the 16 ministries/departments have put all these projects in GIS mode, which are to be completed by 2024-25, at the platform.
  • The platform will provide high resolution satellite images, infrastructure, utilities, administrative boundaries, land and logistics.
  • "Gati Shakti will be a National Infrastructure Master Plan for our country which will lay the foundation of holistic infrastructure. Right now, there is no coordination between our means of transport. Gati Shakti will break the silos and will remove all these obstacles," the official added.
  • It would help in increasing productivity of industry, support local manufacturers, enhance competitiveness of industry and also help in developing new possibilities for the creation of future economic zones.
  • It has been prepared depicting economic zones and the infrastructure linkages required to support them that can ensure the seamless movement of goods, besides integrating the planning and designing of projects with a common and holistic vision.
  • "It will resolve issues of disjointed planning, lack of standardisation, issues of clearances and timely creation and optimal utilisation of capacities. It seeks to use latest technologies like a Geographic Information

Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur launched Delhi Hockey Weekend League 2021-22 at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium

  • Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports ShriAnurag Singh Thakur launched the ‘Delhi Hockey Weekend League 2021-22' which is taking place at the iconic Major Dhyanchand National Stadium.
  • ShriAnurag Singh Thakur said that Men's and Women's teams' success in Tokyo Olympics has given a new lease of life to Hockey as a sport in India. Speaking at the event Shri Thakur said that there is no dearth of talent in India and I congratulate Delhi Hockey for this initiative which will help induct more talent at the grassroots. 
  • We aim to nurture grassroots talent towards the global excellence. Training and competitions are equally important as they boost the morale of athletes.
