Indian Army Chief General M.M. Naravane attends Army Chiefs' Conference in Bangladesh

  • Chief of Army Staff General MM Naravane on Thursday left for Bangladesh on a five-day visit to further expand cooperation and coordination between the two countries on a host of strategic issues.
  • The visit comes less than two weeks after Prime Minister NarendraModi travelled to the neighbouring country.
  • General Naravane will pay tributes to the fallen heroes of Bangladesh liberation war and it will be followed by a one-on-one meetings with the three service chiefs, officials said.
  • The Army chief will also interact with Bangladesh's foreign minister on April 11.
  • "This visit from April 8 to 12 will further deepen the bilateral relationships between the two armies and act as a catalyst for closer coordination and cooperation between the two countries on a host of strategic issues," Army Spokesperson Colonel AmanAnand said.
  • The year 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Bangladesh and the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh MujiburRahman.

::INTERNATIONAL::

Vietnam: Nguyen Xuan Phuc sworn in as new president in capital Hanoi

  • Vietnam's legislature voted  to make Pham Minh Chinh, a member of the Communist party with a history as a security official, the country's next Prime Minister. Outgoing Prime Minister Nguyen XuanPhuc was appointed the new President.
  • The votes of the nearly 500 members of the National Assembly rubber stamped the leadership picks the Communist party made during its national congress in January.
  • MrChinh, 62, most recently was a member of the Communist party's central committee for personnel and organization. MrChinh has had a mixed career in the party apparatus and in the security sector.
  • He held various posts in the Ministry of Public Security before being selected by the party to be the head of QuangNinh, a province bordering with China. He is credited with helping with economic development in the province through administrative reform.

::ECONOMY::

The Central Government has banned the export of injectable Remdesivir and Remdesivir Active Pharmaceutical Instruments (APIs) in view of the COVID situation in the country

  • The Centre on Sunday prohibited exports of Remdesivir injection and Remdesivir Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API), anticipating an increase in demand for the drug used in the treatment of covid-19 patients amid a surge in coronavirus infections in the country.
  • The government said the order will be in place till the situation of covid-19 pandemic improves in the country. “India is witnessing a recent surge in covid-19 cases. As on 11 April, there are 11.08 lakh active covid-19 cases and they are steadily increasing. This has led to a sudden spike in demand for Remdesivir injection used in the treatment of covid patients. There is a potential of further increase in this demand in the coming days," said Union health minister in a statement.
  • Seven Indian companies are producing Injection Remdesivir under voluntary licensing agreement with Gilead Sciences. They have an installed capacity of about 38.80 lakh units per month.

Hideki Matsuyama of Japan won the Masters tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta (USA)

  • After riding out a four-hour swirl of emotions to finally secure history Sunday, Hideki Matsuyama lifted his cap and gave a slight bow.
  • With the hopes of a nation atop his broad shoulders, Matsuyama did just enough to hold on at Augusta, Ga., becoming the first player from Japan to win a men's major tournament with a one-shot victory at the Masters.
  • After heading into the final round with a four-shot lead, the 29-year old picked up his first victory worldwide in four years with a 1-over-par 73 in the final round at Augusta National to finish a steady four days at 10-under 278.
