New Indian envoy to UK: Ranjan Mathai
- Ranjan Mathai, former Foreign Secretary of India, has taken over as the country’s next High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

Mr. Mathai succeeds Jaimini Bhagwati, who retired recently.Born on May 24, 1952, Mr. Mathai joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1974, after completing Post Graduate studies in Political Science at the University of Poona.
- He served in Indian Missions in Vienna, Colombo, Washington, Tehran and Brussels.

As Joint Secretary (BSM) in the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi (January 1995 to February 1998), he headed the Division dealing with India’s relations with Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Maldives.
He was the Ambassador of India to Israel from February 1998 to June 2001 and to Qatar from August 2001 to July 2005. - He next held the post of Deputy High Commissioner of India to the UK in London from August 2005 to January 2007.
- He served as the Ambassador of India to France with concurrent accreditation to the Principality of Monaco from January 2007 till he assumed the office of Foreign Secretary from August 2011 to July 2013.
India’s mid-day meal scheme ranked 12th among lower-middle-income countries

A global report by the World Food Project (WFP) for 2013 on 169 countries has said that India has the largest school feeding programme in the world, catering to over 114 million children, but stands 12th among 35 lower-middle-income countries covering 79 per cent of its total number of school-going children.

The report titled “State of School Feeding Worldwide, 2013” draws from a global survey conducted by WFP in 2012 and a series of case studies and peer reviewed technical working papers undertaken in collaboration with partner countries.

The report notes that gross primary enrolment grew between 2001-2002 and 2007-2008 in India, following the implementation of the mid-day meal programme, particularly among Scheduled Castes and Tribes.
Countries like Brazil, Chile and Scotland have demonstrated the effectiveness of purchasing school food locally in order to simultaneously “feed children better and stimulate the local economy.”

The UN General Assembly proclaimed 10 December as Human Rights Day in 1950, to bring to the attention ‘of the peoples of the world’ the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as the common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations.
Indian cricket team's title-sponsor rights, bagged by Star India
- Star India bid Rs 1.92 crore per match for bilateral series, and Rs 61 lack per match for ICC-sponsored tournaments. The group now holds the rights from January 1, 2014, to March 31, 2017.
- The rights include the right to be called the official team sponsor, and to display a commercial logo on the men's, women's, Under-19 and A teams' kits.
- Star now holds all three important rights: broadcasting, series title and team sponsorship.
