::NATIONAL::

Parliament passed the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2021 which will establish a Central University in Ladakh

  • On 9th August, the Tribunal Reform Bill, 2021 was passed by Rajya Sabha. The Bill was approved by the Lok Sabha on August 3. The Bill seeks to amend the Cinematograph Act, 1952, the Customs Act, 1962, the Airports Authority of India Act, 1994, the Trade Marks Act, 1999 and the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act, 2001 and certain other legislations.
  • Provides uniform terms and service conditions such as minimum age, tenure, and retirement age for the Chairperson and Members of Tribunals/Authorities.
  • Provides for the composition of the Selection Committee for Selection in State Administrative Tribunals.
  • Rationalises tribunals by abolishing five tribunals, transferring their Jurisdiction directly to the Commercial Court or High Court for speedy justice delivery.

::INTERNATIONAL::

India, Saudi Arabia begin first naval exercise

  • A frontline Indian warship is currently participating in the first naval exercise with Saudi Arabia, reflecting the growing defence ties between the two sides in the wake of the Indian Army chief’s first visit to the West Asian country last year. 
  • INS Kochi, the flagship destroyer of the Indian Western Naval Fleet, arrived at Port Al-Jubail on Monday for the “Al-Mohed Al-Hindi 2021” exercise. The warship sailed to Saudi Arabia after conducting the “Zayed Talwar” drill with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) off the coast of Abu Dhabi.
  • India’s defence and military ties with Saudi Arabia received a major boost with Indian Army chief Gen MM Naravane’s visit to Riyadh – the first such trip by an Indian service chief – last December. Naravane had also visited the UAE on the same tour.
  • The Al-Mohed Al-Hindi exercise began with the harbour phase on Monday, and the Indian embassy said the drill “heralds a new chapter in the bilateral defence ties”. INS Kochi was welcomed at the port by officials of the Royal Saudi Naval Forces, Border Guards and the Indian embassy. 

::ECONOMY::

PM Modi transferred around Rs 19,500 crore to more than 9.75 crore farmers under PM-KISAN (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi) scheme

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday virtually transferred about Rs 19,500 crore to over 9.75 crore beneficiaries farmers under the government's PM-KISAN scheme.
  • With this, the government has so far transferred nine installments amounting around Rs 1.57 lakh crore to farmer families under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme.
  • After the release of the amount, the Prime Minister interacted with beneficiaries of this scheme from across the country.
  • An annual financial benefit of Rs 6,000 is provided to eligible beneficiary farmer families, payable in three equal four-monthly installments of Rs 2,000 each, under the PM-KISAN scheme.
  • The scheme was announced in February 2019 in the Budget. The first installment was for December 2018-March 2019 period. The fund is transferred directly to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries.

::SCIENCE AND TECH::

NASA Mars rover fails to collect rock in search of alien life

  • NASA's Perseverance drilled into the surface of Mars but failed in its initial attempt to collect rock samples that would be picked up by future missions for analysis by scientists on Earth. 
  • But data sent to Earth by the rover after its first attempt to collect a sample and seal it in a tube indicated no rock had been gathered.
  • "While this is not the 'hole-in-one' we hoped for, there is always risk with breaking new ground," said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA's science mission directorate, in a statement.
  • "I'm confident we have the right team working this, and we will persevere toward a solution to ensure future success."
  • The drill hole is the first step of a sampling process that is expected to take about 11 days, with the aim of looking for signs of ancient microbial life that may have been preserved in ancient lakebed deposits.

::SPORTS::

Indian Army to participate in International Army Games 2021 in Russia from 22nd August to 4th September

  • A 101 member contingent of the Indian Army will proceed to Russia to participate in International Army Games - 2021 from 22 August to 04 September 2021. The contingent will participate in Army Scout Masters Competition (ASMC), Elbrus Ring, Polar Star, Sniper Frontier and Safe Route games showcasing various drills in High Altitude Area terrain, operations in snow, sniper actions, combat engineering skills in obstacle ridden terrain in the various competitions. 
  • The contingent will also contribute two observers (one each) for the Open Water and Falcon Hunting games in which Pontoon Bridge laying and UAV crew skills will be showcased by the participating teams.
