Centuries old textile designs, natural dyes archived digitally
- BSI director said that paintings of plants, textile designs from various countries and even natural dyes that have remained hidden for centuries are now accessible with a single click in its digital repository
- Cities like Kabul and Herat in war-torn Afghanistan may no longer be accessible for cultural exploration, but centuries old textile designs and natural dyes that were once used in these cities and other countries such as Iran and Uzbekistan in the west to Singapore and Thailand in the east, along with those in India in the 19th century, are now just a click away.
- The Botanical Survey of India (BSI), which is the custodian of this largest repository of centuries old textile designs, natural dyes and plant drawings, has digitally archived all its collections preserved till date.
- “It is a huge repository. Paintings of plants, textile designs from various countries and even natural dyes that have remained hidden for centuries are now accessible with a single click. They will be very useful not just for botanists but also professionals working in the field of fashion and garment technology,” said AA Mao, director of BSI.

New Taliban provincial governor vows to fight IS
- As a Taliban commander, he spent years battling the former Afghan government. Now, with his hardline movement back in power, Mullah Neda Mohammad vows to continue fighting against rival jihadists, the Islamic State (IS) group.
- Following the Taliban's victory in August, Mohammad took over as governor of Nangarhar province, home to the IS Afghanistan-Pakistan chapter's stronghold.
- "We are searching for individuals who are hiding," Mohammad told AFP, claiming his forces have arrested 70 to 80 IS members since they took control of Nangarhar's provincial capital Jalalabad, the country's fifth biggest city.
- IS have been responsible for some of the deadliest attacks in Afghanistan of recent years, massacring civilians at mosques, shrines, public squares and even hospitals.
- The group claimed responsibility for a devastating suicide bombing near Kabul airport on August 26 that killed more than 100 Afghans and 13 US soldiers.

Vi pays interest to FT amid ambiguity over reset clause
- The asset management company (AMC) wrote down and then segregated its exposure to Vodafone Idea in January last year, following an adverse Supreme Court ruling on the telco’s liabilities.
- Franklin Templeton is negotiating with Vodafone Idea over an interest rate reset clause in the Vodafone paper, a person aware of the matter said, requesting anonymity. The asset manager has an exposure of around 1,250 crore to the telecom firm.
- The debt has a provision for ‘interest rate reset’ on September 3. However, in a notice to unitholders on August 16, Franklin Templeton dropped the reference to the put and call portion, citing implementation of a change effected by valuation agencies under the guidance of the Association of Mutual Funds in India’s valuation committee. It is unclear whether Franklin Templeton will be able to force Vodafone Idea to exercise the put option if the company cannot pay the interest rate.
- Text messages to a Franklin Templeton spokesperson seeking clarity were not answered at the time of going to press.

Nasa shares photo of sceptre-like object in space captured by Hubble telescope
- American space agency Nasa recently released the photograph of a relatively rare celestial phenomenon known as a Herbig-Haro object. The image has been captured by the Nasa/ESA Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3.
- The object is called HH111, Nasa said, adding they develop under very specific circumstances.
- "The streams of ionized gas then collide with the clouds of gas and dust surrounding newly formed stars at speeds of hundreds of miles per second. It is these energetic collisions that create Herbig-Haro objects such as HH111," the space agency said.
- Nasa further said that Herbig-Haro objects actually release a lot of light at optical wavelengths, but are difficult to observe because their surrounding dust and gas absorb much of the visible light.
- The first documented case of Herbig-Haro object was recorded in late 19th century by American astronomer Sherburne Wesley Burnham. He looked at the star T Tauri with the 36-inch refracting telescope.

Tokyo Paralympics 2020: India ranked 24th with 19 medals
- Ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, India's cumulative medal tally over the years stood at a somewhat meagre 12. The best ever showing had been at the 2016 Rio Paralympics where India had won four medals. A lot has however changed over the last few days as India entered the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics with an unprecedented contingent of 54 athletes.
- As the Tokyo games drew to a close on Sunday, India's medal tally stood at a whopping 19 medals. The list includes five gold, eight silver and six bronze medals. And the cumulative tally has now moved rapidly from 12 to 31.
