Vice President inaugurates Mahabahu Brahmaputra River Heritage Center in Guwahati
- Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, who is in Assam as part of a three-day tour to the northeast, inaugurated the Mahabahu Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre in the presence of Governor JagdishMukhi and Chief Minister HimantaBiswaSarma.
- The Vice President called for a national campaign to rejuvenate the country’s rivers and suggested that “we save our rivers with a sense of immediacy”.
- “In the past, our villages and cities used to be dotted with several water bodies. In the quest for modernization, man, driven by greed, has destroyed natural ecosystems and at several places, the water bodies have virtually disappeared or have been encroached upon,” he said.
- In a detailed Facebook post later, Naidu praised the effort to covert the bungalow into a heritage property and commented on its beauty.
- “This is where the great warrior LachitBarphukan made a decisive attack on the Mughals and forced them to return….Transforming this bungalow into Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre is a mark of respect for this vast river that nourished the civilisation here for centuries,” he wrote.
- Located atop BarphukanarTilla, a small hillock named after the most famous Ahom general LachitBarphukan, it is the site from where the Ahom forces planned and launched attacks on the Mughal army during the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, which the latter lost.

Russia test-fires Tsirkon (Zircon) hypersonic cruise missile from a submarine for the first time
- The country's defence ministry, which originally test fired the weapon - also known as Zircon - from a warship in July, said the second test, deployed in the Barents Sea, had hit its chosen target.
- Low-quality video footage released by the ministry showed the missile shooting up from the submarine, lighting up the night sky and illuminating the water's surface.
- "The test firing of the Tsirkon missile from a nuclear submarine was deemed successful," the ministry said.
- Some western experts have questioned how advanced Russia's new generation of weapons are, but recognised the combination of speed manoeuvrability and altitude makes them difficult to track and intercept.

- Footage released in July of the country's new advanced S-500 surface-to-air missile system appeared to have been deliberately blurred, making it harder to examine.
- Tsirkon is intended to arm Russian cruisers, frigates and submarines.
