White House summons Chinese envoy to protest provocations, Beijing issues threat

  • The White House on Friday summoned Chinese ambassador to protest against Beijing's provocative actions, national security spokesperson John Kirby said. Amid intensifying tension with China over US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, US officials told the envoy that China's military actions are irresponsible and at odds with maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
  • A while ago, China said it is canceling or suspending dialogue with the United States on a range of issues from climate change to military relations and anti-drug efforts in retaliation for the visit this week.
  • China's top diplomat Wang Yi said the US has no right to make a mistake again of allowing another US House Speaker to visit Taiwan. “US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi disregarded the strong opposition from China. It is brazen that they made a visit to China's Taiwan area. It has seriously impacted China's sovereignty and interfered with our internal affairs,” the Chinese foreign minister said.
  • Taiwan's defence ministry said a total of 68 Chinese military aircraft and 13 navy ships were conducting missions in the sensitive Taiwan Strait and some of them have "deliberately" crossed an unofficial buffer separating the two sides.
  • According to reports, US officials made it clear to the envoy that United States is prepared for what Beijing chooses to do.
  • China further said more than 100 warplanes and 10 warships have taken part in the live-fire military drills surrounding Taiwan over the past two days, while announcing mainly symbolic sanctions against Pelosi and her family over her visit to Taiwan, that China considers as its territory.

Hotels and restaurants cannot charge service charges by default: Central Consumer Protection Authority

  • THE CENTRAL Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) on Monday barred hotels and restaurants from adding service charge “automatically or by default” in the food bill. It said that in case of violation, a consumer can ask the hotel/ restaurant to remove the service charge, or seek redressal by filing a complaint.
  • “The guidelines issued by CCPA stipulate that hotels or restaurants shall not add service charge automatically or by default in the food bill. No collection of service charge shall be done by any other name,” the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said in a statement.
  • “No hotel or restaurant shall force a consumer to pay service charge and shall clearly inform the consumer that service charge is voluntary, optional and at consumer’s discretion,” it said.
  • The ministry specified that there should be no restriction on entry or provision of services based on collection of service charge. “Service charge shall not be collected by adding it along with the food bill and levying GST on the total amount,” it said.
  • “If any consumer finds that a hotel or restaurant is levying service charge in violation to the guidelines, a consumer may make a request to the concerned hotel or restaurant to remove service charge from the bill amount,” it said.
  • “Also, the consumer may lodge a complaint on the National Consumer Helpline (NCH), which works as an alternate dispute redressal mechanism at the pre-litigation level, by calling 1915 or through the NCH mobile app,” it said. “The consumer may also file a complaint against unfair trade practice with the Consumer Commission,” it said.
  • According to the guidelines issued by the CCPA for “preventing unfair trade practices and violation of consumer rights with regard to levying of service charge in hotels and restaurants”, consumers can file complaints online, via e-daakhil portal (www.e-daakhil.nic.in). In addition, they can submit a complaint to the district collector for investigation and subsequent proceedings by the CCPA. The consumers can also email their complaints to the CCPA at com-ccpa@nic.in.

Three colonial-era burials found in 1000-year-old pre-Hispanic Peru sanctuary

  • A team of Peruvian archaeologists uncovered three burials from the Spanish colonial period on top of a pre-Hispanic temple, which may be up to 500 years old, a researcher said.
  • Peru was under Spanish rule for nearly 300 years, from 1532 when they invaded and defeated the Inca empire until 1821 when popular uprisings led to independence.
  • "We are working with the hypothesis that the remains belong to a colonial cemetery," Lucenida Carrion, head of the Archaeology Directorate of the Park of Legends in the Peruvian capital, told AFP.
  • The park's 54 archeological monuments and sanctuaries have been the subject of study for decades.
  • "In this summit, we have discovered the burials of two adults and a child who were wrapped in cotton cloth," the archaeologist added.
  • The temple, or pre-Hispanic sanctuary known as "Tres Palos" where the burial site is located, is more than 1,000 years old and is located on land adjacent to the park.
  • After the pre-Hispanic era, the site was inhabited by settlers from colonial Lima.
  • "We are considering whether the remains are from the colonial era," Carrion said, pointing to the clothes, hair and a Christian crucifix found on one of the remains.
  • "This finding is important because it will help us determine if there has been a continuous occupation at this site since pre-Hispanic times."
  • During the 15th and 16th centuries, the "Tres Palos" sanctuary was used by the Incas as a tambo (food deposit) and during the colonial era, adobe (mud and straw) houses were built.

CWG 2022: 'We lost momentum after the clock howler' - India women's hockey coach

  • The Hockeyroos set up the gold medal clash against England after a controversial 3-0 win over India on penalties.
  • During the shootout, Australia's Rosie Malone missed her shot but to the dismay of the Indian team and fans, the forward was given a second chance as a technical official, B Morgan of England, had failed to start the clock on time.
  • Each player gets eight seconds to put the ball into the net in the shootout.
  • Given a second chance, Malone scored and that set the tone for the shootout as the Indians failed their first three attempts, while Australia converted all their chances.
  • "After that, we lost a little bit of our momentum. Then it did go in, and everyone is deflated," Schopman, a double Olympic medallist said.
