Repealing Art 370

  • BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi's call for a debate on Article 370 of the Constitution, which gives a special status to Jammu and Kashmir, has recently triggered a fresh round of debate on the controversial issue.
  • But many legal experts are of the view that abrogating the provision would put the accession of the state to India in jeopardy.
  • Some experts believe that if Article 370 was abrogated, then technically and legally the foundation of Jammu and Kashmir's accession to India would cease to exist However, few lawyers believe that under Article 368, Parliament does have power to amend the Constitution. But in view of the Supreme Court's ruling in the Kesvanand Bharti case, Parliament can't amend the basic structure of the Constitution".

India offers help to destroy Syria’s chemical weapons

  • India, an aspirant to next month's Geneva-II talks on Syria, has offered the services of its experts to help in the destruction of Damascus' chemical weapons arsenal and related facilities

  • India has also decided to offer a contribution of 1 million dollars for use in the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons and related facilities by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

  • India has found support from Russia for its participation in an international conference called Geneva-II which seeks to bring together all warring parties, domestic and international, to stablilise Syria.

  • India would also offer the services of its experts to be used by the OPCW in the destruction verification activity as well as training slots for personnel participating in the UN/OPCW mission for the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons.

29th anniversary of Bhopal gas tragedy

  • Survivors of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy held a sit-in at the city’s Lower Lake to mark the incident’s 29th anniversary.

  • NGO Chingari provides the second- and third-generation children with special education and therapy. These children, who suffer ailments such as cerebral palsy, impairments of speech and hearing, epilepsy, heart diseases and others, were accompanied at the protest by parents and grandparents who survived the poisonous gas leak from Union Carbide factory in 1984.

  • As many as 16,000 people were killed on the intervening night of December 2 and 3 that year. Their progeny, numbering lakhs, continue to suffer the effects. “No cure, no jobs”

Cook and Dhoni named captains of ICC teams of the year

  • England captain Alastair Cook was named skipper of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) test team of this year .
  • The left-handed opener's England team mates Graeme Swann and James Anderson were also included in the 11-man team while world number one test side South Africa were represented by four players.
  • South Africa paceman Dale Steyn was included in the test side for the sixth consecutive year, while two players each from Australia and India made up the remaining four slots.

MS Dhoni signs a record Rs25 crore bat endorsement deal with Spartan Sports and Amity University

  • A deal signed between Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni with sports brand Spartan Sports and education brand Amity University amounting to Rs25 crore has increased his brand value.
  • Dhoni was usurped by Virat Kohli recently, as the top ad magnet in Indian sports but this new bat deal between the Indian star who is in South Africa now was represented by Arun Pandey of Rhiti Sports, the company that manages him.
  • Spartan Sports already sponsors Australian captain Michael Clarke and Olympic gold medal-winning Australian swimmer Stephanie Rice and MS Dhoni is another big name they have signed.
  • A new bat range named '7 by MSD' is to enter the market soon and Dhoni's bats will also sport the logo.
  • The logo of Amity University with interests in education will also feature on Dhoni's bat.
