Narendra Modi will become the first Indian Prime Minister to chair the UNSC discussion

  • Prime Minister NarendraModi will virtually preside over an open debate on maritime security at the UN Security Council (UNSC) on August 9.
  • Spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs ArindamBagchi said it will be the first time an Indian Prime Minister will chair an open debate at the UN Security Council. India is holding the presidency of the UNSC for August.
  • India began its two-year tenure as a non-permanent member of the UNSC on January 1. It is India's seventh term on the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member. India has previously been a member of the UN Security Council in 1950-51, 1967-68, 1972-73, 1977-78, 1984-85, and 1991-92.

::INTERNATIONAL::

Taliban, Afghan forces clash in Herat, govt sends reinforcements

  • Afghanistan has deployed hundreds of commandos to Herat as the ongoing clashes intensified in the western city between the Taliban and Afghan security forces. The Afghan ministry of defense said the members of the special force have been sent to Herat adjoining Iran on Sunday, a day after the Taliban advanced closer to the central parts of the city.
  • Tolo News channel reported citing local officials that the clashes have also intensified in several villages in the western parts of Herat city and said the provincial governor's spokesperson JailaniFarhad said that around 100 Taliban have been killed in the attacks.
  • “There are clashes in Pul-e-Malan on the battlefield and the Taliban were prevented from advancing. Sometimes troops move forward and then retreat but it does not mean that the lines were broken,” Abdul SaboorQane, the provincial governor, said according to the channel.

::ECONOMY::

India records highest ever monthly merchandise exports of $35.17 billion in July 2021

  • India has recorded the highest ever monthly merchandise export in July this year. The merchandise exports rose to 35.17 billion dollar in July, an increase of 47.91 per cent over the same period last year.
  • Commerce and Industry Minister PiyushGoyal said, Prime Minister NarendraModi’s vision for Aatmanirbhar Bharat has given a boost to exports. 
  • He said, the Indian Merchandise Exports has increased to 22 per cent in April to July this year over the same period of 2019. MrGoyal said, India’s exports have covered 32.64 per cent of its annual target of 400 billion dollar.
  • The top five commodity groups of export which have recorded positive growth during July this year are – Petroleum Products, Gems and Jewellery, Other Cereals, Man-made fabrics, and Cotton Fabrics, Handloom Products.

::SCIENCE AND TECH::

ISRO-NASA joint mission NISAR satellite to be launched in 2023

  • The ISRO-NASA joint mission NISER (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellite, aimed at making global measurement of land surface changes using advanced radar imaging, is proposed to be launched in early 2023.
  • "NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISER) has not been launched yet. NISER is proposed to be launched in early 2023," said Mr Singh, who also is the minister for the Department of Space.
  • It is a dual-band (L-band and S-band) radar imaging mission with the capability of full polarimetric and interferometric modes of operation to observe minor changes in land, vegetation and cryosphere.
  • NASA is developing L-band SAR and associated systems while ISRO is developing S-band SAR, spacecraft bus, the launch vehicle and associated launch services, Singh said.
  • The major scientific objectives of the mission are to improve understanding of the impact of climate change on Earth's changing ecosystems, land and coastal processes, land deformations and cryosphere, he said.

Denmark's Viktor Axelsen wins gold in men's singles

  • Denmark's Viktor Axelsen swept the men's singles Olympic gold medal on Monday, unseating Chen Long of China who claimed the title at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
  • Axelsen and Chen, two of the world's most brutal smashers, ended their match 21-15 21-12 after nearly an hour of flash shots and mesmerising rallies. Afterwards, Chen embraced and spoke in Chinese with Axelsen, who was still sobbing when he left the court.
  • "He told me that I deserved it, and my performance here has been great. And I said 'Thank you so much and that he has been a big inspiration to me," said Axelsen, who had just hung up from a call with Frederik, the crown prince of Denmark.
