SSC CHSL EXAM Descriptive Paper Syllabus


Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has published the latest notification for the candidates who have been declared qualified in the Combined Higher Secondary Level (10 + 2) Examination 2014, for which the result was announced on 17 April 2015. The written examination was conducted by the Commission to screen candidates for recruitment to the Group “C” posts of Data Entry Operator and Lower Division Clerk in various Ministries and Departments of Central Government.

As per the notification, all the shortlisted candidates will be required to appear in the Stage II-Descriptive paper to be considered for next selection process to the above mentioned posts. The Descriptive Examination is scheduled to be held on 10 May 2015. It is explicitly mentioned that Descriptive paper will be of qualifying in nature which implies that marks obtained by the candidates in this paper will not be considered for the formulation of the Final merit list.

The SSC CGSL Descriptive paper will broadly cover the syllabus already notified in the original notice published on 19-7-2014. It will consist of Quantitative Abilities, English Comprehension, General Intelligence and Reasoning and General Awareness of 50 marks each. Below, we have described complete syllabus.

General Intelligence & Reasoning:. Topics in this section will be- Analogies, Similarities and Differences, Space Visualization, Spatial Orientation, Problem Solving, Visual Memory, Discrimination, Observation, Relationship Concepts, Arithmetical Reasoning & Figural Classification, Arithmetic Number Series, Non-Verbal Series, Coding and Decoding, Statement Conclusion, Syllogistic Reasoning, Symbolic/Number Classification, Figural Classification, Semantic Series, Number Series, Figural Series, Problem Solving, Word Building, Venn Diagrams, Drawing inferences, Punched hole/pattern –folding & un-folding, Figural Pattern – folding and completion, Address matching, Date & city matching, Classification of centre codes/roll numbers, Small & Capital letters/numbers coding, decoding and classification, Embedded Figures, Critical thinking and Cause & Effect.

General Knowledge: Questions in this component will aim to test the candidate’s general awareness of the General Science around him and its application to society. Questions will also be designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of every day observations and experience in their scientific aspect as may be expected of any educated person. The test will also include questions relating to India and its neighbouring countries especially pertaining History, Culture, Geography, Economic, General Policy & Scientific Research.

Quantitative Aptitude: In this section questions would be asked broadly from four sections i.e. Arithmetic, Algebra, Mensuration and Geometry/Trigonometry. Among the four sections Arithmetic is the easiest. Topics in this section include Percentage, Ratio & Proportion, Square roots, Averages, Interest, Profit and Loss, Discount, Partnership Business, Mixture and Alligation, Time and distance, Time & Work. Another section is Algebra. From Geometry and Mensuration/Trigonometry sections question would be asked from the topics like-Triangle and its various kinds of centres, Congruence and similarity of triangles, Circle and its chords, tangents, Triangle, Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons, Circle, Rectangular Parallelepiped, Regular Right Pyramid with triangular or square base, Trigonometric ratio, Degree and Radian Measures, Standard Identities, Complementary angles, Heights and Distances, Histogram, Frequency polygon.

English Language & Comprehension: Questions in this section will be designed to test the candidate‘s understanding and knowledge of English Language. This section could also be divided into three parts, namely Grammar, Vocabulary and Comprehension/Verbal logic. In the Grammar section question would be asked form the topics like-spot error, and improvement of the sentences. From vocabulary section questions would be asked from the topics like –Synonyms, Antonyms, Spelling/detecting miss-spelt words, one word substitution, Idioms & phrases and etc. Rests of the questions would be asked from the Comprehensive part, from this section questions would be asked from the topics like – Reading Comprehension, Close passage and etc.
