WHO warns countries with low vaccination coverage against opening up economies

  • World Health Organization (WHO) emergencies programme head Michael Ryan on Wednesday urged countries to take extreme caution when reopening economies amid the threat presented by the Delta variant of Sars-Cov-2. During a news conference in Geneva, Ryan warned countries with low levels of vaccination coverage against opening up, saying the presence of variants could start filling the hospitals again.
  • “Countries opening up who have very low levels of vaccination coverage in the presence of variants is a real toxic mixture for your hospitals filling up again. And this is something that must absolutely be avoided,” said Ryan.
  • Commenting on Britain’s decision to remove most of the coronavirus-induced restrictions, the senior WHO official said all countries are trying to reach a balance of measures that allow their societies to open up while trying to maintain an element of control over the coronavirus disease (Covid-19). He said that the United Kingdom, which has achieved a high rate of vaccination, is “very alert to the threat represented by variants, especially the Delta variant.”
  • "Vaccine nationalism, where a handful of nations have taken the lion’s share, is morally indefensible and an ineffective public health strategy against a respiratory virus that is mutating quickly and becoming increasingly effective at moving from human-to-human," said Ghebreyesus.

RBI to conduct ₹20,000 crore bond purchase under G-SAP

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will carry out open market purchase of government bonds worth ₹20,000 crore under the G-sec Acquisition Programme (G-SAP 2.0) on Thursday. RBI governor Shaktikanta Das had said earlier this month that the bank will conduct these purchases to support the market.
  • The RBI has kept a target of purchansing government securities of ₹1.2 lakh crore under the G-SAP 2.0 in the second quarter of the financial year.
  • The next purchase for ₹20,000 crore is scheduled to take place on July 22.
  • The first such auction of ₹25,000 crore was held on April 15 this year. The second purchase of ₹35,000 crore took place on May 20.
  • With the bond-buying plan, the RBI plans to keep a lid on long-term interest rates amid a massive government borrowing programme.
  • The government raises money from the market to fund its fiscal deficit through dated securities and treasury bills.
  • The RBI has said it remains committed to use all instruments at its command to revive the economy by maintaining congenial financial conditions, mitigate the impact of Covid-19 and restore the economy to a path of sustainable growth while preserving macroeconomic and financial stability.

Four homeless 'rogue planets' of Earth-mass found near centre of galaxy

  • A new research has located four planets of similar mass to Earth and without any host star. The discovery has been published in 'Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society'. These so-called rogue planets are free-floating, possibly after having been ejected from their star systems by the gravitational tug of heavier planets, the study said.
  • Led by Iain McDonald of the University of Manchester, UK, the study used data obtained in 2016 during the K2 mission phase of NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope. During this two-month campaign, Kepler monitored a crowded field of millions of stars near the center of our Galaxy every 30 minutes in order to find rare gravitational microlensing events.
  • The study team found 27 short-duration candidatemicrolensing signals that varied over timescales of between an hour and 10 days. Many of these had been previously seen in data obtained simultaneously from the ground. However, the four shortest events are new discoveries that are consistent with planets of similar masses to Earth.
  • Despite being ejected out of their solar systems, previous research has suggested that rogue planets could hang onto nearly half their moons during the ejection process and potentially maintain conditions for life for billions of years.
