PM Modi launches 'ShikshakParv' on the occasion of National Teacher's Day

  • Teachers' Day 2021 is being celebrated all across the country today. Like last year, the Department of School Education and Literacy is celebrating the ShikshakParv on this occasion to honour the valuable contributions of teachers and take the National Policy on Education (NEP) 2020 a step further.
  • ShikshakParv 2021 will be virtually celebrated from today to September 17. President Ram NathKovind has conferred 44 teachers with National awards at a virtual event today. 
  • A documentary on all these 44 awardees will also be screened during this period.
  • The National Teachers' Awards was first introduced in 1958 to honour the excellence and commitment of teachers in shaping the minds of future youth as well as empowering them. These awards are given to publicly honour talented teachers working in primary and secondary schools.
  • The deputy chief minister said two special awards will also be given to BhartiKalra and Sarita Rani Bhardwaj, who provided tablet devices to students during the pandemic and helped them in various ways so that they could continue their studies. 
  • He said out of 1,108 applications received for these teacher awards, the committee has finalized 122 applications. He also pointed out that earlier the number of awards was 103, which has been increased this year. Also, the criteria of 15 years of teaching experience considered for award has been reduced to three years.

World Social Protection Report 2020-22 released

  • The International Labour Organization (ILO) will issue its World Social Protection Report 2020-22: Social protection at the crossroads – in pursuit of a better future on Wednesday 1 September.
  • This flagship report gives a global overview of recent developments in social protection systems, including social protection floors, and covers the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on new data, it offers a broad range of global, regional and country statistics on social protection coverage, the benefits provided and related public expenditure.
  • The report also identifies protection gaps and sets out key policy recommendations, including in relation to the targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

::ECONOMY::

Vartika Shukla became the first woman CMD of Engineers India Limited

  • VartikaShukla is set to be the next Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of Engineers India Limited (EIL), a Navratna PSU under the administrative control of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG). 
  • Her name has been recommended by a Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB). She is currently serving as Director (Technical) in the same organisation since August 1.
  • This was the first interview followed by a recommendation of the public sector head hunter body after a gap of several months.
  • Shukla has been selected for the post of CMD of EIL from a list of eight candidates, who were interviewed by the selection panel that is also is being led by a woman MallikaSrinivasan. 
  • A total of six candidates including Shukla who were on the list were from EIL and two other candidates were from Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL) and the Department of Commerce. Currently, EIL's Director (Commercial) Rakesh Kumar Sabharwal, is holding the additional charge as CMD of EIL.

::SPORTS::

130th edition of Durand Cup begins in Calcutta

  • The 130th edition of the oldest club football tournament in Asia – The Durand Cup, will finally kick off on Sunday featuring the Group A clash between Mohammedan Sporting Club and the Indian Air Force football team. The match is slated for a 4:15 PM kick-off at the Vivekananda YubabharatiKrirangan (VYBK). The curtain-raiser of the tournament will be preceded by an opening ceremony, where West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be the chief guest.
  • Mohammedan SC – the first civilian club to win the Durand Cup in 1940, are the sole flag-bearers of Kolkata football in this year’s tournament.
