Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat resigns from the post

  • Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat handed in his resignation to the Governor on 02-07-2021, barely four months after he took charge and just ahead of polls next year in the state.
  • MrRawat, who is an MP, would need to win an assembly seat and become a member of the Uttarakhand legislative assembly by September 10.
  • "There are many by-elections due. The Covid situation is a major consideration," Election Commission sources had said this morning.
  • To the BJP's chagrin, the new Chief Minister did no better than his predecessor in defusing the infighting in Uttarakhand.
  • Former chief minister and Congress leader Harish Rawat hit out at the BJP government in the state and said the party has made the position of its leaders ridiculous. In a series of tweets and a video, MrRawat also said TirathRawat had become a "joke" after no decision was taken on contesting elections.

US Army leaves Bagram airbase after nearly 20 years

  • The Bagram airfield in Afghanistan remained staffed by the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing of the US Force for nearly 20 years, while rotating units of the US Army, the Navy, and the Marine Corps also used the airfield as a base.
  • The United States military has finally left Afghanistan's Bagram airfield after nearly two decades, reported the Associated Press on Friday. The infamous airfield had been the site of several military encounters, particularly the epicenter of the US 'war on terror' in Afghanistan following the 9/11 terror attacks.
  • Citing two US military officials familiar with the development, AP reported that the Bagram airfield, in its entirety, has been handed over to the Afghan National Security and Defense Force. The officials, however, remained anonymous since they were not officially authorised to release the development to the media.
  • The Bagram airbase in Afghanistan has been the site of the US military's war against the Taliban and the al-Qaida terrorist outfits. It remained staffed by the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing of the US Force for nearly 20 years, while rotating units of the US Army, the Navy, and the Marine Corps also used the airfield as a base.

Center approves 14 eligible applicants under PLI (Production Linked Incentive) scheme for IT Hardware

  • The Ministry of Electronics and IT on Thursday approved 14 eligible applicants under the Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) for IT hardware. The target segments under the PLI Scheme for IT Hardware include laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers and servers.
  • PLI Scheme for IT Hardware notified on 3rd March 2021, extends an incentive of 4 percent to 2 percent/1 percent on net incremental sales (over the base year of FY 2019-20) of goods under target segments that are manufactured in India to eligible companies, for a period of four years (FY2021-22 to FY 2024-25). The target segments under the PLI Scheme for IT Hardware include Laptops, Tablets, All-in-One Personal Computers (PCs) and Servers, read a release by the Ministry of Electronics and IT.
  • The scheme proposes production linked incentives to boost domestic manufacturing and attract large investments in the value chain of these IT Hardware products.

::SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY::

Pregnant women in India are now eligible for COVID vaccination: NTAGI (National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization)

  • Based on recommendations from National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI), the Union Ministry of Health and family Welfare (MoHFW)  approved the vaccination of pregnant women against COVID-19. The decision empowers pregnant women to make an informed choice on taking the COVID vaccination.  The decision has been communicated to all the States/ UTs to implement it under the ongoing National COVID Vaccination Program.
  • India’s National COVID Vaccination program incorporates recommendations of the foremost experts in the field of immunization, public health, disease control and information technology. Based on scientific and epidemiological evidence, the programme gives priority to strengthening the country’s healthcare system by protecting the professionals, health and frontline workers, manning it, as well as protecting the most vulnerable population groups. Till date, all groups except pregnant women were eligible for COVID-19 vaccination. Now, it is expanded to even pregnant women in the world’s largest Immunization drive.
  • Studies have shown that COVID-19 infection during pregnancy may result in rapid deterioration of health of pregnant women and they are at an increased risk of severe diseases and it might affect fetus too. 
  • The matter has been examined by domain knowledge experts based on the evidence that indicate that pregnant women are at an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 compared to non-pregnant women in case they get infected. 
  • Further, pregnant women with COVID-19 infection are at an increased risk for preterm birth and other adverse pregnancy outcomes including higher chances of neonatal morbidity. Additionally, the experts have also highlighted pre-existing co-morbidities, advanced maternal age, and high body mass Index as factors for severe COVID-19 in pregnancy.

Mana Patel becomes first Indian woman swimmer to qualify for Tokyo 2020 Olympics

  • India's MaanaPatel  became the first female and only the third swimmer from the country to punch her Tokyo Olympics 2021 ticket. Patel, a backstroke simmer from Ahmedabad, joins SrihariNataraj and SajanPrakash to have qualified for the event and secured a direct entry. The development was confirmed by Sports Minister KirenRijiju.
  • Patel, 21, is a decorated athlete having won gold medals in 50 backstroke and 200 metre backstroke also at the National Games. She also clinched gold in 100 metre backstroke at the 60th National School Games (2015) breaking the national record in backstroke.
