The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has been conducting the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Exam yearly for the past couple of years. Prior to 2010 it used to be irregular and not many vacancies used to be there.
These days it has become the largest exam of the country perhaps only challenged by Bank PO Exams.
More and more people have started to appear in this exam because, it is conducted yearly, has a large number of attractive post, is entirely objective type and the results take only a year. It offers a large number of options in the same way as UPSC Civil Services Exam. Officer position in Customs and Central Excise, Income Tax, CAG, etc. are offered through this exam. However, it is not as vast as IAS Exam. For those who see IAS as a distant dream or want a decently paying job this is a very important exam.
The govt. has recenetly announced that it will recruit more than 40,000 Inspectors in Income Tax Dept. itself in the next 2 years through SSC.
