Rahane to lead India in Zimbabwe tour

  • India’s rising batting star Ajinkya Rahane will lead the 15-man squad for the Zimbabwe tour, with several senior players including MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli being rested, BCCI officials said at a press conference on Monday.

  • Taking note of the fatigue factor, the selectors have also rested Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin and Umesh Yadav.

  • The Indian team just concluded a disappointing tour of Bangladesh, losing the ODI series 1-2, completing seven months of continuous cricket.

  • The board decided to send a second string team, giving the younger players a chance in the tour comprising three ODIs and two T20s.

  • Of all India's young batsmen, Rahane has been the most consistent in the tough away tours since December 2013.

  • He has scored hundreds in New Zealand, England and Australia. He narrowly missed getting one in South Africa (he was out for 96).

Jwala,Ponnappa duo wins Canada Open

  • After winning the Canada Open women's doubles title with Jwala Gutta on Sunday, Indian shuttler Ashwini Ponnappa cited consistency as the key to their success, saying the victory is a big boost ahead of the prestigious World Championship in August.

  • The 2010 Commonwealth Games gold-medallist pair of Ashwini and Jwala defeated the top-seeded Dutch pair of Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek 21-19 21-16 to clinch the US$ 50,000 Canada Open Grand Prix tournament.

  • India's best doubles pair, Ashwini and Jwala, won as many as four bronze medals last year but a title win has eluded them and Ashwini said it was nice to annex a trophy after a long time.

  • Ashwini and Jwala had taken a break post the London Olympics and this is their first title since their reunion after the 2012 Games.

  • The duo trained separately for some time but now with the World Championship round the corner, they will once again start training together.

Olympic medallist Vijender Singh could end his boxing career

  • Vijender Singh may never be seen in India colours again — the Olympic bronze medallist (Beijing 2008) has been training in the UK with Queensberry Promotions and has given the ongoing national camp in Patiala a miss.

  • All this could be indication that he's about to go pro. And once a boxer turns professional, he cannot compete at an amateur level (unless they're part of The International Boxing Association's pro boxing competetion APB). What this means is Vijender won't be able to compete at the Olympicsngh.

  • According to a report in The Indian Express, Vijender is training with a company owned by popular British boxing promoter Francis Warren.

  • He is scheduled to return to India on 13 July, and an announcement on his decision is expected shortly.

Australia wash india 6-2 in Hockey World League

  • India's defence caved in under pressure as a rampaging Australia crushed them 6-2 in the last league fixture of the FIH World League Semifinals today.

  • Penalty corner shooter Chris Ciriello's three conversions set World champions Australia on course for a runaway victory that duly placed them atop Group A standings with four straight wins, while India finished in second spot with seven points from four matches.

  • Birender Lakra (34th minute) and Ramandeep Singh (51st) reduced the defeat margin for India in the match, which dominated by the world number one side.

  • Pakistan finished third in the group after squandering a penalty stroke and missing chances galore in open play to be held to a 2-2 draw by France.

Paraguay shown the door to Brazil in Copa cup

  • Brazil’s penalty shoot-out jinx struck again as Paraguay sent it crashing out of the Copa America in a stunning repeat of its 2011 upset of the five-time world champion.

  • Striker Derlis Gonzalez was the hero for Paraguay, slotting a second-half penalty to level the match at 1-1 before stepping up to rifle home the decisive spotkick to clinch a 4-3 win in the shoot-out on Saturday.

  • It marked another bitter defeat for Brazil, which went out to Paraguay at the same stage of the competition four years ago, when it also lost on penalties.

  • Paraguay will now play Argentina in the semifinals on Tuesday, a rematch of their first round game which finished 2-2. Chile will face Peru on Monday in the other semifinal.

  • A sweeping counter-attack ended with the ball transferred to Dani Alves on the right, who once again whipped in a perfect cross and Robinho was on hand to tuck away a close-range finish for his 28th international goal.
