India, Bangladesh agree on Chetia’s deportation

Even as Bangladesh on Monday denied a 'deal' in its decision to hand over ULFA leader Anup Chetia to India, the deportation will indeed be part of a 'swap' in which New Delhi will match the neighbouring country's gesture by transferring two Bangladeshi criminals — Subrata Bain and Sajjad Hossain — who are in Indian jails.

Besides, New Delhi also assured Dhaka of coordination with the latter's agencies to track, arrest and hand over the killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Spain passenger train derails, 77 people killed

At least 77 people have been killed after a train derailed in the northern Spanish region of Galicia on Wednesday evening, said a spokeswoman for Galicia's Supreme Court.
Seventy-three people died at the accident site and four died in hospital, the spokeswoman said on Thursday morning, adding that the numbers were still provisional. Judges in Spain are responsible for recording the deaths.

Pakistani lawmakers vote for new president

Polling started on Tuesday in Pakistan's National Assembly and four other provincial centres to elect a new president who will replace incumbent Asif Ali Zardari in September.

The polling started at 10am amidst strict security arrangements at the National Assembly, the four provincial assemblies and the Senate.

The voting will continue without any break till 3pm. Mamnoon Hussain, the India-born nominee of ruling PML-N, is likely to win the elections for the 12th president in the one-on-one contest with ex-judge Wajihuddin Ahmad of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf party.

Indian-American nominated for key post in Obama Administration

US state department’s heavy hitter for India will be an Indian origin bureaucrat, Nisha Desai Biswal, a first for both the community and the administration. President Barack Obama on Thursday sent a proposal to the senate to appoint Biswal assistant secretary of state for South Asia, top US diplomat for India.
